Unions are needed because the 'product' of schools is human beings. Students come to school with all kinds of issues beyond a teacher's control and it's the job of teachers to do their best to educate these imperfect little people. Some have advantages and others have disadvantages. Teachers have no control over the individuals that end up in their classroom and the backgrounds/home life/mental, emotional, physical functioning of those individuals. Because of this, they need the protection that a union provides. If a parent/guardian or student has a mental health issue teachers need to be protected from false accusations or violence. If a child has an issue that makes it difficult to learn and the parent/guardian won't do anything about it, teachers need protection from being fired when that student doesn't make enough progress. Even the OP's claim that their child isn't learning may be the teacher's fault - or it may be that the administration has set rules that are limiting the teachers or it may be that the curriculum chosen by the district isn't great or it may be that the OP's children are refusing to work and the OP isn't holding them accountable. Who is the front-line, though? Teachers, so it must be their fault. Hence the need for the union.
This is COMPLETE B.S. Private school teachers do not need unions. Most people do not need unions in their jobs, even though they are at the front-line. They either are a good teacher or not. And, as many pointed out, police officers are also the front-line with human beings who blame them all the time, but they do not need unions. The issue with unions is then the "supervisor" and the "employee" are literally the same person and the TEACHERS who need to be held ACCOUNTABLE are not because they also control the BOARDS (basically funding only pro-union candidates and the other ones have no funding) so that the Teachers/Boards are the exact same person and we get the shittiest teachers in the world. (Same thing happens with police unions but just with city council. And, both of them control at the state levels, too, due to what is nothing short of bribing political officials to do their bidding.) We need to get rid of unions. PERIOD.
