Really can’t stand the lynch mob mentality of social media.

Wait, she used an awful racial slur via social media.... live by the keyboard, die by the keyboard.
And lynching is something entirely different than what you used it for. Hardly applicable and very offensive in this situation.

Are you really so obtuse as to miss him pointing out what is father did in a national news story? Unlike Mimi’s video, there was no evidence of his dad’s language. Yet he managed to get that into the article. Anyone reading the article now knows about the father as well.

This kid is a clown. He could have handled this so much better.

He may not regret it now, but he sure will when he goes to find a job. When a potential employer does a quick Google search, this will come up. No one wants a snake on their team. There was no reason for this to be handled like this.

He hasn’t encouraged the general public to go after his dad like he did a teenager...

This is so true. He had screwed himself over big time.

Karma is a b*tch if you are.

That and the whole bit about black people being their own worse enemy and I think I’m done with DCUM today.

You are an extremist nut job, that is why you are getting the response you are getting from multiple people. Try dealing with reality and not some embellished article by the New York Times. There is a difference.

I’m not finding much sympathy for her in my heart at the moment. It’s not like this kid held onto the video for years waiting to attack. Sounds like maybe a few months? He had previously made similar reports of students using racial slurs before to absolutely no effect. His timing was perfect. She posted about BLM, and his calling her out in that moment had impact. It’s a brutal, but effective lesson for her and everything other white person who has ever casually thrown around a slur, worn blackface, etc. I strongly suspect that had she posted in support of BLM while also acknowledging her own past behavior, he would not have called her out in response.

Same good be said for the young woman who will no doubt be judged much more harshly by any prospective employer.

I think the NYT could have focused more on how this is a pattern within a school system vs. an isolated incident.

Only held onto it for 3 years.

Was it wrong of her to say it? YES.
Was it wrong for him to handle it this way? ALSO YES.

People only care about the human interest story. NYT wrote this to be sympathetic to her or they wouldn’t have included all the points about his family. And look, all the racist apologists came out of the woodwork here to rail on how awful this is for her.

Judging by the sympathy she’s getting here, I think she will be just fine.

Honestly, who do you think this harms more, long term?

They’re both kids. I wish these things wouldn’t follow them for the rest of their lives, but we all know that’s not the case.
