This. Privileged people who can afford to center themselves at he middle of every tragedy so they can feel something for once in their little lives. This is nothing new for those of us in the trenches working in our communities since before there was clout in performing online while still doing nothing to actually help. |
It affects me OP because I know that but for random circumstance, any one of these people could have been me. Or my child, parent, spouse, friend. |
I'm emotionally impacted, but definitely less than a lot of my friends.
I think it's because I've acknowledged there's not much I can really, truly to do to fix everything on a large scale. I do what I can personally, donating what money I can, volunteering with some local campaigns, etc. And I just try to be a good person and live in the moment to the extent that I can. I think the fact that I read a lot helps. Human misery is not new. |
Very true. People that don’t know history are the easiest to be manipulated by those in power. |

The above bonded section is a [i]bit far fetched [/i ![]() |
Same. And I can’t help but laugh inside at these people wearing masks all around. I have no doubt they may be helpful but they look so stupid. And I just never see evidence that the virus is continuing in places where it initially spread. Seems like it just moved through. |

I am a Biden supporter, but the hyperbolic suggestions you make should Trump have a second term are ridiculous. Work to get Biden elected instead of needless hand wringing. |
![]() You’re vapid. |
Please stop spreading the materially false myth of the large number of leftists who won’t vote for Biden. It’s both-sidesing and it’s not true - and it’s going to tick people off necessarily. Signed - voted for Sanders in the primary in 2016 and then for Clinton in the general, as did everyone I know who shared my primary vote —- and is geared up to vote in person for Biden. |
The ability to rationalize, absorb, and move past the terrible things that happen in this world, without wrapping it around us like a weighted blanket, is a super power. There are tons of us like this and it allows us to rise above the human condition and get shiz done. Go us! |
How old are you? I was 16 when 9/11 happened, and I distinctly remember getting very "jaded" by current events after that because I was so turned off by how the news media exploited 9/11 for ratings. I guess I became cynical. Now, it just seems like such an endless cycle of "bad news" that I just tune most of it out.
I will say, one thing I was truly shocked by was when Trayvon Martin was killed. I remember hearing that on NPR and just being totally shocked that that could happen. |
Haven't read all the responses but OP, I don't think you are abnormal for not being emotionally impacted. I don't think it's a bad thing.
I am emotionally impacted for sure. But DH is less so, and he's in a helping profession. But I think it's good that he doesn't carry that emotional burden with him constantly - he wouldn't be able to do his job otherwise. He can be empathic in the moment, but he doesn't carry it around with him or let it take over. He's able to compartmentalize or create some kind of distance, which allows him to do his job more effectively. |
Well you have not personally witnessed any of the atrocities in history, have you? And yet they happened. We’ve never lived in a more fair and more just society. Take a walk through your history books. Go back to ancient civilizations and medieval history to the Roman Empire, to colonialism. Humanity has been brutal and violent and we are lucky to be living in a relatively fair and just world. |
