I feel empathy for many Americans, but can’t say I am fearful for democracy or that on the day after the election we’ll return to some mythic unity as a country. Americans have ALWAYS been divided, except for rare instances where outsiders directly threatened us. The media feeds off of and reinforces negative energies to get clicks and make money. Tune it out and just be kind to all you meet. It is contagious. |
There is only so much energy and worry to go around. I often think people who are "traumatized" by someone getting shot across the country must have nothing serious going on in their own lives. I actually view those people as privileged. Some of us have close family members dying, children losing parents, children who are ill. We have no time or energy to care about someone getting shot in Kentucky. Sorry but it's true. If you have time to care, you are privileged |
This might be me. I have been numb since I saw the George Floyd video. |
OP here - for the people who say I am selfish, why is that? It isn’t that I am not acknowledging these are horrible things or don’t think we should impose change. I just don’t carry it with me. I have volunteered and donated money to combat these issues.
I also don’t think it is a privilege thing - for instance, I understand the impact of RBJ open seat and Trump getting another seat. I am woman. I would never use the word traumatic though or let it bring me down for more than a few hours. |
I’m with you OP it is just women borrowing trouble. Assuming you vote and care and stay informed, carrying around sorrow for someone or something you don’t know is childish and attention seeking. It is not noble. Thousands of people die every day in myriad tragic and terrible ways. Do what you can and then move on with your life. You only get one! |
I'm like you op, but mostly because I am burned out of all this woke stuff. It seems everything is a issue or need to be fought these days.... at this point I just roll my eyes when I see some of this crap, like someone going on and on about how Paw Patrol (the children's cartoon) is misogynist and a bunch of other people going like "oh, I have never thought about it, but this is so true!"
And regarding BLM, I cannot understand why some people seem so shocked suddenly - did they live in la la land and didn't know police brutality is a thing in this country, specially towards black and, recently, latinos? Politics: this has been a crappy year and I have already prepared myself that trump will be re-elected. I will still vote of course, but it is clear to me that this is the country we are living in - a majority of obnoxious, racists, ignorant and plain stupid people in one hand, and a bunch of woke and purists - also obnoxious, ignorant and plain stupid in the other hand that will not vote for Biden because he is not their choice. They apparantly never heard of the word compromise of the expression "the lesser of two evils." |
I feel empathy for those directly living some of this. I understand why some people are more emotionally impacted by events even if they are not directly related to them.
But I'm good at compartmentalizing. My job pretty much requires it. So I fully support the need for certain changes but at the same time I will continue living my life and living a generally happy life. I don't watch the news much. I'm skeptical of a lot of media reporting. I'm very turned off by many people on both sides of the political spectrum so tune a lot of it out. |
NP and I agree. I see a lot of stuff being posted on FB and just roll my eyes at all these people being attention seeking victims. Maybe because it just seems so fake. There are so, so many issues that go on on a daily basis that no one is crying over. |
Stuff like that drives me crazy. And those who act like that don't understand how damaging it all is for people to get burned out on the "woke stuff". I think my favorite experience (sarcastic) was when someone was telling me that a certain pattern on a sweater was cultural appropriation. That is part of my culture and I said something the lines of "well no a lot of us aren't bothered by things like that. It is really things like X and Y that are offensive" And that person that tried to argue that I was wrong and that it was offensive. I told her that she was being more offensive than the sweater but that just led her to dig deeper into her stance. It was beyond ridiculous. |
I don’t, either.
I stay away from social media (I’m on it but I unfollow anyone who posts about politics) and I don’t watch the news. I listen to 2 podcasts, one from each “side” although both are fairly moderate. This feels very balanced and sustainable for me. I can tell that political posts on FB have a huge negative impact on me, I can feel my blood pressure and anxiety rise, even if it’s something I agree with. My mental health has gotten SO much better since giving it up. I’m still empathetic and there are issues I care about. But being in a constant state of “fight or flight” mode (which is exactly what everyone is in - fight mode) means I can’t help anyone. |
This. |
Do you vote? Which way? |
I have similar feelings to PP. I usually vote Democrat because of the issues I believe in. Just because I'm not emotionally impacted, think SJW have gotten out of hand, and roll my eyes at some people's reactions doesn't mean I don't support certain issues.
This year I almost dont want to vote because I detest both candidates so much and I'm really, really turned off by both parties right now. |
Me. My new strategy is to not care. It is very freeing. |
Oh the revolution will punch you in the face first. The weak minded are the first to resist and be trampled by the jack boots of history. |
