Mask wearing went up significantly on the trail after July 4th and went well above 70% on the trail during the fall and even higher as it colder.

Today, in beautiful weather, mask usage on the CT was below 70% (64%) for the first time in 4 months.

Good, hopefully by the summer we can ditch this masks on the trail BS.

Ditch it now. Normalize unmasking outside, people - there is zero need. Especially for a fleeting pass.

The fact that anyone thinks covid numbers are even slightly, marginally, itsy-bitsy teeny tiny mildy connected to outside passes... is seriously mind boggling.

But it's not just a fleeting pass. That only applies to people going the other direction. You may be behind someone for a while on the same side, or vice versa.

PLus it's cumulative- all these itsy-bitsy passes add up to a lot of small exposures, and theoretically higher viral load depending how many positive people you pass.

Unless you are severely (and I mean SEVERELY immunocompromised) it would be nearly impossible to get covid this way. Mask outdoors is unnecessary as long as you move. Now, when people start having picnics and hanging out, that is different.

This whole thread shows how dumb people are in understanding how the virus works and is spread.

Wear a mask and distance indoors, ventilation cannot keep up with virus load. Outdoors this is not the same unless you decided to stop and talk to someone for a while a few feet away.

I feel like I'm living in a completely different universe than people like pp/you. I am baffled how people think like this. Going for a walk outside and passing a person, cracking a smile to acknowledge them is not like your step counter adding up a few steps here and a few steps there until you reach a special number. And then it resets at midnight or something.

You are literally surrounded by air circulation and ventilation and so much air.

So.

Much.

Air.

I see some people wearing a double mask outside (and not to/from a store or something) and it's just mind boggling. The outside air is safe. Passing people in a brief pass maskless is fine. Just... try it. The only way to conquer your fears is to just take that step and do it. Really... it is ok.

WEAR YOUR MASK WITHIN 6 FEET OF PEOPLE.

This means you should always take your mask with you when you leave the house.

You should wear them if the area is so crowded that people get within 6 feet of you repeatedly. But don't constantly whip your mask on and off, because that's also a contamination risk. You need to look around and use good judgement.

And what are you going to do about it when I don’t?

God, you people are such ridiculous toddlers. "I don't wanna and U CAN'T MAKE ME!!!" FOOT STOMP!!

Yes, that's why medical providers like nurses who sweat while they run off their feet nonstop for 12-hour shifts change their masks every four minutes?

Excuses, excuses.

18 masks on
126 no masks
12.5% usage

Way down from prior weekends' usage. Essentially, an older couple walking together or a stray biker. That's it and that's different from weekends prior.

You probably narc’d on the kids who back in HS skipped class on Friday afternoons, didn’t you? You do you...

There is no "you do you" during a pandemic, you imbecile. Your selfish actions affect the whole.

And skipping class isn't a highly-transmissible breathborne respiratory illness in which we're currently in a pandemic (and P.S. neither are car accidents or cancer), but you already knew that.

It is not “highly-transmissible” outdoors during a fleeting pass. Please, please try to lower your anxiety levels. And yes, I know we’re !!inapandemic!!!

Do these people really think that, for example, if you pass 100 people outside and 10 of them have covid, that the little covid particles build up like a cloud around you and infect you? I don’t understand the thought process behind the “little bits of covid pile up and become a big pile of covid”.

This is down from a headcount over the last 2 weeks of just over 25%. Weekday use of masks is less than 20%.
Today, there was one group of family bikers of 10 all wearing masks. Otherwise, the % would have been much lower today,

Great Falls (MD side) on Weds. >95% of people we passed on the canal and walk out to Olmstead Island.

The Washington Post printed an article in October trying to show the correlation between states where mask usage was very high compared to lower usage states. It came to the conclusion mask wearing was important.

The problem is the positive case rate went through the roof in all states in mid November through early January regardless of mask wearing. The other issue is 2 states had mask usage in the 60% range and most were above 80%. At the time of the report, over 80% of americans said they wore a mask in public.

The new data shows the highest positive case counts actually correlate to the highest mask usage. NY, TX, CA, FL all report over 83% mask usage. There doesn't seem to be any correlation between mask wearing and lower infection. The argument for mask wearing says more people get sick without a mask but the numbers don't support it.

Wearing masks outside on a trail is total theatre and does nothing to reduce the spread of COVID.

We are a year into this. It astonishes me that people do not understand the mechanisms of spread.

It reminds me of those social experiments where a stooge enters a room full of people (insiders). Every minute a bell rings and everyone stands up. The stooge dutifully falls in line without asking after 2 or 3 dings.

Government put out mask warning to make it seem they had a plan and a way to fight back even though they knew it had virtually no effect.

My goodness this thread is off the rails...it's like nobody understands math, or odds. There is literally no risk outside while exercising. Zero. The weather is improving this week here in DC, get outside and enjoy it...mask free!
Anonymous
I'd like to reverse the social experiment and send out people on the Crescent Trail without masks and see how many people shed theirs.

I have been all over the C&O Canal, Great Falls and CC Trail. No mask. There are others as well. I keep my distance and to myself and go about my business. No issues either way. Just always be very respectful of space.
