Anyone else surprised by a lack of interest in William & Mary?

DS wants to go to grad school so grading makes a difference. Also, if you want to transfer out, hard to do with lower grades.

Average GPA at William & Mary was 3.33 in 2014. At UVA it was 3.32 in 2013. No difference for those. Ivy League and top privates tend to have the highest average GPAs, but you have to be admitted.

2013 is light years ago in today's college admissions. UVA has now eclipsed W&M in GPA and test scores. SCHEV reports median GPA for last years (sept 2019) entering class at William and Mary to be a 4.26 (4.46 for 75th percentile). The SCHEV for UVA for entering class of 2019 is even hiigher than W&M now. The median UVA GPA is a 4.35 with a 75th percentile GPA of 4.49.

The post was about average GPA of students AT W&M and UVA, not about average GPA of enrolled students. It was a response to the post above.

Still, any stats from 2013 are useless.

Why don't you start with "oops, my mistake" (since it was your mistake). Do you have better stats on average GPAs of graduates of W&M or UVA?

The SCHEV poster surfaces on many UVA threads.

Not running out of money at all. Gender imbalance is a bit of a concern.

Absurd statement. It's a state school. You can say that about privates thate are overspending on marketing and admissions but not state-supported schools. The legislature will always bail the college out if it did start to have a problem.

I said it’s not running out of money. In fact, it’s closing in on its billion dollar fundraising goal.

Then you would want UVA over W&M in a flash. My DD is in aerospace engineering. https://www.ecampusnews.com/2019/05/09/how-the-university-of-virginia-is-leading-the-nation-in-elevating-women-in-stem/

Well, W&M obviously doesn't have engineering (other than 3:2 with Columbia), but it produces more STEM PHDs per capita than any other national university except Berkeley.

cite please. and "per capita" would be the key point in your claim. W&M is a small school.

And I bolded the "Running out of money" line above. I'm responding to the bold.

cite, please.

It doesn't really require a cite. It just is a fact. I've watched W&M tuition and costs run up in the last six years but don't know why. Currently instate is 36K inclusive and OOS is 60K inclusive. UVA was $16K for instate tuition only when my DD started there (lives off campus so I don't know what the current total is but will go look it up for you).

You’re making an assertion. Back it up with a citation and your claim will have something behind it.

I meant national public universities. List is hugely dominated by privates. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/top-50-schools-that-produce-science-phds/

Absurd characterization. Both are superb institutions filled with extremely bright students who also have fun. WVU is a big party school.

OMG, Wake a big party school, no way. Graduated from Wake as well as two other family members at different times-know the school very well. The party scene at MCPS High Schools is more intense than Wake. Students at Wake actually go to sporting events completely sober and watch the games. Of course there are Greeks and parties but it is in no way a party school.

I think my kid wished Williamsburg was more of a college town, like Charlottesville, but he was turned off by the fratty UVA culture.

W&M has a greater no. of students participating in frats than UVA. Also, you can go to UVA for four years and never once step into a greek house - they are all off campus.

I am curious if anyone really turned down UVA to go to W&M if admitted to both?

I did, years ago.

Same with me. My freshman hall did as well.

In other words, she can't get into UVA. Cool story tho.

About a third or so of my son's class.

Literally impossible for this to be true. Please shed some light on this. What school? We'll look at attendance figures from that school.

You’re way over invested in this.
