Anyone else surprised by a lack of interest in William & Mary?

Freshman seem very into the sports culture.

You can't really compare sports culture at a D3 to a D1 school. And lack of sports culture if anything is a good thing, there's plenty of actual sports being played in intramurals. As opposed to getting drunk and going to the stadium.

Both W&M and VT are in D1

Okay but W&M might as well be D3.

But it’s not. You’ve been told now by at least four different posters that it is a D1. W&M played football against UVA just four weeks ago (UVA won).

It holds 13k. That's not giant but it's not at all tiny. No college soccer stadium has a giant grandstand on one side.

William and Mary is D1. And plenty of people get drunk at the football stadium lol - one end zone is a beer terrace.

Sure, but again the Colonial Conference is not going to be anywhere as rowdy as the Big 10, SEC, even ACC, etc.

Ok and?

It is very tiny. Minute. We know someone who used to brag that his kid played football for W&M. Then we saw the stadium...

They’ve also been reported on for antisemitism on campus:

Where is this NOT happening rn though???
And at least W&M has an active and engaged Hillel student group.

Who cares how big the stadium is if the football being played is good? That's a dumb statement to make. W&M plays in the FCS and their stadium is on the large end of the subdivision. If they ever move up to FBS I'm sure they'll expand further.

That's the point. Some students want massive sport events with rowdy tailgates and what not. Not what I prefer, but that's what some students want and what W&M does not have.

Some do, some don't.
Two of the most applied private schools from the DMV area are NYU and Northeastern.
Both close to or over 100K application. Both don't have football teams.

BTW, I'm not a fan of W&M.

PP was referring to W&M’s significant gay man population, I think. The way I’ve heard that “joke” (such as it is) is William & Larry, which at least rhymes with its actual name. Also Lou Holtz was a football coach there a while back and said they had “not enough William, and too much Mary”.

Holtz also said in his autobiography that he loved William and Mary and would have stayed if the school had gone to what became FBS rather than FCS.

By the way, both NFL football games played yesterday were won by head coaches who played at William and Mary - Mike Tomlin with the Steelers and Sean McDermott with the Bills.

Then they should probably go somewhere else.

It should be a good thing to have a variety of choices.

And yet W&M plays schools like UVA -with all that attendant excitement. You don’t know what you are talking about

The W&M/UVA game was really popular with students too - hundreds made the trip up and the stadium had multiple sections of people wearing green and gold

PP here. I’ve heard Holtz loved his time at W&M. I would much prefer that to a tailgating rah rah school any day of the week.
