Anyone else surprised by a lack of interest in William & Mary?

Old and dated is a weird take. Certainly, it’s old, what with being from 1693, the Wren building, and all. There has been a building boom, though, so it’s not dated. The pressure cooker rep has been around for decades and decades. In the early 90s, one of my UVA-bound high school friends said I was crazy for choosing W&M because of the tough grading. But i just loved the size and feel of the place. I chose W&M for undergrad and UVA fur grad, and yes, I’m a fossil, but I would do it that way again.

My Kid who went there liked to go hiking and camping, went to parties occasionally but preferred hanging out with friends, playing games or watching movies. I think my kid wished Williamsburg was more of a college town, like Charlottesville, but he was turned off by the fratty UVA culture.

W&M has a greater no. of students participating in frats than UVA. Also, you can go to UVA for four years and never once step into a greek house - they are all off campus.

Running out of money because it costs so much to maintain ancient campus and sports teams. Also, gender balance may turn off males and females.

?? $1.0B endowment, newer dorms and an enormous science center. Male/female ratio doesn't seem to be hurting apps. Not as imbalanced as JMU

Not hurting apps, maybe, but hurting women applicants. The school discriminates against women in admissions. JMU doesn't.

Women have always had a hard time getting into William & Mary. I would.have loved to have attended, but they didn't think it was a good idea.

Can't argue with that.

Actually, W&M apps were down last year. But up at UVA, VT and JMU. W&M in-state yield is only 35% vs. 58% at UVA and 46% at VT.

W&M seems to be declining in popularity and choice.

When we were shopping for colleges we visited W&M and were very underwhelmed by the opportunities being offered. Their big promotion was that a student could get involved with Williamsburg doing tourist related stuff. UVA’s emphasis was on internships available in DC which is still 2 hours away.

A lot of students these days want proximity to internships and experiences that are nearby. UVA had a feeling of history to it. W&M felt detached from the modern world.

My DD is a current freshman and I think she is surprised by how many parties she is going to each week. I think it does have a reputation as being a grind, but she's finding the opposite -- collaborative friends/ classmates and plenty of social activities.

Not running out of money at all. Gender imbalance is a bit of a concern.

That was basically my experience too.

There is a William and Mary DC program if internships are your focus.

It does seem to be treading water or stuck in some sort of popularity rut. It’s not clear why other than to say bigger schools have become preferred choices fur many.

Absurd statement. It's a state school. You can say that about privates thate are overspending on marketing and admissions but not state-supported schools. The legislature will always bail the college out if it did start to have a problem.
