nobody is denying anything that is true - we are just trying to balance out UVA boosters all of whom happen to be from Virginia. if UVA is so prestigious why aren’t people from Cali and Florida coming here to praise it? there are none. Every single one is a parent from NOVa |
Acceptance on their own are pretty meaningless. It really comes down to the quality of the admitted students. There was pretty much an arms race on lowering acceptance rates driven by USNews (which has now dropped it) causing schools to take actions to drive up the denominator. UVA's acceptance rate actually breaks down to 36% in-state and 19% OOS. The 36% may sound high, but there is a lot of self-selection. |
| I live in MD. I am one of those parents who would be wiling to spring for private school tuition but only for the most prestigious schools. UVA is definitively not on that list. I am not saying it's not an excellent school or perhaps even better than UMCP. It's just that the difference is, such as it is, is not worth the money. I would pay for Johns Hopkins though. |
| The idea of higher education should not be to have a select few schools declared the holy grail and all others be declared losers to differing degrees. Even Einstein attended the second best school in Zurich. |
| It is prestigious. And it’s now a long shot for most VA students (all but the elite in NoVa). |
Who called UVA kids losers? |
Because this is a DC centric board. UVA, is among the top universities in the nation for many disciplines. Not all. But many. And there are people in FL, in CA, in MA, in NY coming to UVA for College. Similarly, there are people who get into UVA and decide it is not for them. My DD preferred the atmosphere at Va Tech over UVA. |
it’s a DC centric board but people from MD Zaire decidedly less impressed by UVA. why is that? |
| Because UVA isn't all that. UVA is a fine school. I'd put it up with Berkeley and UCLA and Michigan as one of the top 3 public universities in the country. I'd be happy if my kid got in there. But it's not comparable to University of Chicago or HYPS, despite some posters insistence. And it shouldn't be. It's a public school, so it's mission is different and more inclusive than that of "elite " schools. |
Because the cost is higher. Duh. |
oh, but cost is supposed be irrelevant. we are talking prestige here, remember? HYPS is high prestige in everyone's mind. UVA isn't - certainly not to the same extent. nobody is denying that UVA is a good deal for virginia residents. but that's very different from saying that UVA is a top school in terms of prestige and that it is comparable to harvard or university of chicago. it isn't. and that's ok. |
Agree 100%. I don’t know what school is “all that“- Ivies in this discussion? All schools have a place, every school draws a specific type of kid, and that for kids who are bound for the most elite and most selective private institutions, UVA probably is a safety school. I’m a UVA grad and I think that is 100% accurate. |
| I remembered some past president of the college acknowledging that the school was not nearly as prestigious as it presented itself. I’m pretty sure that was the defining moment for me. I assume she knew far more about that assessment than I could ever gleam from an outsider view. |
Interesting interpretation of that post. |
