Why deny UVA?

If you don't say prestigious, why not? You should. It is not as prestigious as the Ivies, but top 25 in the nation is not shabby, and it's more than just "fine".

So university of fla is prestigious?

But was he at TJ? Lots of TJ students fill that 25th percentile because their GPAs are lower than they would have been had they stayed in their home schools.

No she wasn't at TJ. And how many TJ students do you think score below UVA's 25th percentile on the SAT? Get a clue, man.

She attended one of the NOVA neighborhood high schools typically ranked in the middle of the top 10.

Man, here. Quite a few. Because someone at TJ has to be in the bottom the of class and not go to Ivies, Stanford or MIT, they still have wonderful test scores but lower GPAs than they would have had had they stayed in their home schools. Also TJ families tend to value in-state UVA because they are frugal and most of their kids are going on to expensive grad programs. TJ sents between 125-160 students each year to UVA.

Fake news. TJ sends 60 to 70 kids to UVA each year.

I believe it was 72 last year.

I thought it was well over 100. Maybe I have acceptances confused with attendance

What a hilarious post! So TJ parents are frugal...a full 1/3 of the grads apply to Cornell with close to $70K/yr cost of attendance. Being an Ivy, Cornell offers no merit-based aid. I can't imagine any other school in the area that has such a huge percentage of grads applying to %70K/yr schools.

It's 74% asian American. Most of the families are focused on education but come from MC and UMC backgrounds from all over the area. Many are applying to Cornell hoping for financial aid. If that doesn't come through, then yes, they go to UVA, W&M or Virginia Tech for tech. Most of these families are focused on the expense of the next level: grad school.

My white girl from NOVA. Is in with a 3.9 and 1270 SAT. Lots of extras (musicals, sports, Governors school), but not spectacular tests or grades.

Well you were very very lucky. Or you are low-income. Or a Blue Ridge Scholar. https://giving.virginia.edu/scholarships/blue-ridge-scholars/. Or have an exceptionally well-rounded obvious leader as a child. Congratulations.

Or first-generation. Universities are seeking out those students.

UVA is a safety school for the top tier at TJ.

Yes it is. Those that make it (also MIT and CalTech, Ga Tech, etc.) and can afford it go there. The real problem is affording it since most meriit aid at the Ivies has dried up. We couldn't afford it. So many TJ students go to Virginia Tech. Many go to UVA. 72. Our private sent 2 (only 2 got in)

Cornell offers NO merit aid. Need based aid is very close to what the aid calculator tells you. Most TJ parents would donate a kidney to get their kid in.

A lot of people seem to think the number of TJ grads going to in-state public schools is going up due to cost. It is actually going down. It was 179 in 2015, 170 in 2016, 161 in 2017, and 140 in 2018. Perhaps this year will reverse, but more have been going elsewhere.

Hence my "frugal" comment. You can either afford the ivies or you can't. We couldn't. DS went to UVA. And is going to grad school so I'm glad we banked the difference
