For those not staying up
https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2019/05/30/jeopardy-james-holzhauer-inches-closer-ken-jennings-record/1291282001/ The reigning champ and professional sports gambler claimed his 31st victory on "Jeopardy!" Thursday in dominating fashion, with a winning score of $58,612. Holzhauer achieved another runaway win, securing his victory by the end of Double Jeopardy. Holzhauer extended the gap between his competitors – Megan the librarian and Rob the physician – during Final Jeopardy Thursday as the only contestant answer a question about "National Anthems" correctly. The Final Jeopardy riddle: "Its anthem was adopted in 1947 to replace one by Joseph Haydn that had been tainted by association with Nazis." Holzhauer correctly responded, "What is Austria?" Megan and Rob finished with $7,599 and $1, respectively. Thursday's haul brings Holzhauer's total on the popular game show to a whopping $2,382,583, less than $150,000 away from Ken Jennings' all-time "Jeopardy!" total of $2,520,700, a record for non-tournament play. Holzhauer could pass Jennings in a matter of days if his streak continues, by using his aggressive strategy of targeting higher-valued clues first and wagering big on Daily Doubles. On April 17, he won $131,127, a single-day record for the quiz show. Jennings and Holzhauer are the only two "Jeopardy!" contestants to earn $2 million or more in regular, non-tournament winnings, a barrier Holzhauer crossed in Friday's episode. However, it has taken Holzhauer fewer than half the number of episodes to rack up the prize money, a feat that Jennings called "astounding." Despite inching closer to the Jennings' all-time winning record, Holzhauer's 31 victories still pale next to Jennings' record 74 wins. |
Surprised they can’t preempt MeTV or whatever 7.1 broadcasts to keep Jeopardy going live. But with that said, your post seems to lack empathy. It’s been the norm since broadcast TV became a thing to broadcast ongoing weather events in the broadcast area. |
When each game commences, he starts with the same size "stack" as anyone else. His skill is in increasing the stack during the course of the game with correct answers, having the edge on the buzzer and most important being willing to wager aggressively when he gets a daily double. All of these are things that every contestant can do if they have the knowledge, the speed and the cojones to wager aggressively when they get the DD. |
| Channel 7 is going to show Thursday’s pre-emoted Jeopardy tonight (Saturday) at 7:30pm. |
Exactly. He's not "pushing around" anyone. As you said, they all start each game with the same amount of money - $0. His past winnings don't affect each new game. He's just got an incredibly broad knowledge base and astoundingly quick recall. He plays the game beautifully. The people criticizing him obviously don't understand how to play. |

I think it’s getting boring to watch. But I’m sensitive so I feel bad for the opponents. They just stand there the whole time! They get no time to shine! Such is life...
But I think it’s boring to watch him dominate so much night after night. |
I disagree. I think the regular show, such as what we saw during the teacher's tournament, is boring now. I hope he just keeps on winning everyday forever. |
Not this opponent: https://sunny99.iheart.com/featured/dana-and-jay-in-the-morning/content/2019-04-30-james-holzhauer-only-won-by-18-on-jeopardy-last-night/ James won by only $18 and had that guy bet just a bit more on his double jeopardy, he’d have won. |
|
Rumor has it James loses tonight. If it's true, and from the news story it appears it is, I say he did it on purpose but I'm not sure why he wouldn't want to beat Ken Jennings' record.

I watched James for the first time last week. After all the hubbub, I was surprised by how little charisma he had. Maybe I'll tune in tonight to see if he loses.
For the person bitching about Jeopardy being pre-empted by weather alerts - wasn't there a guy a couple weeks ago that went off because his station got so much blowback for pre-empting the bachelor? Can't find the video just now. |
The article says he didn't wager enough in final jeopardy but if you do the math, he would have still lost if he wagered it all. His opponent (who had more money than him coming in to final jeopardy)wagered the proper amount t beat him by $1 if he had wagered all of his. So it looks like he just got beat straight up. |
| Bummer that there was a spoiler. |
|
Spoiler alert
Anyone else think Holzhauer intentionally lost his game? Why on earth would he bet such an uncharacteristically low amount given that he entered Final Jeopardy in 2nd place? Hmmm... |
Pp here. I take my post back. The math makes sense
|
I actually think it’s kind of cool for his opponents to be able to say that they lost to the famous James Holzhour(sp?). Makes for a better story to tell the grandkids someday. |
