His scores probably aren't low compared to the scores of his cohort going into his assigned MS. Some do get off waitlist. We turned down the MS magnets last year. Happy to forgo long bus rides in return for "enriched" classes. Poster above in this thread indicates there is more movement in the waitlists under the new admissions offer system. That makes sense to me - when it was a parent driven application, the parents had already considered the impact the transportation might have - now, kids invited to test, more (yay!) test, results come in, and then the real thinking about family schedules begins. |
OP here. I don't mind saying -- we are Caucasian. No ESOL/FARMS/IEP/504, although I truly hope they consider GT/LD for MS because as the aunt of a GT/LD student who kept getting offered placements for the LD but not the GT part, there's a huge need for programs that serve the whole kid.
To PP or future posters who have been accepted -- congratulations! I have an older child finishing at Eastern this year, and another who went through our home middle school and is in high school. Although the older two are different kids with different interests (older is a math science kid, middle is humanities all the way) I can strongly recommend Eastern based on our experience. If all the other factors work out for you and your child, I think the program is wonderful -- my kid had the benefit of not only a strong peer cohort but also a great curriculum and experienced teachers working together to implement the curriculum. The English/social studies program at our home MS is really a joke in comparison -- honors just means grade-level, and there's not a whole lot of emphasis on writing and critical thinking. It's definitely a trade-off with commute time and other factors, but my middle child wouldn't have traded back if she could. I'd go to the open houses for sure before making your decision. |
Is this national averages or MCPS averages for Cogat? |
Thank you for this! I'm the PP with the kid accepted to both programs and trying to figure out logistics and trade-offs. Also waiting to hear about the lottery middle schools (those letters appear to have been mailed as well). Lots to consider, but my kid is very humanities-driven, so it's great to hear from parents with Eastern experience. |
CES kid was put in Wait Pool at MLK and recommended to Clemente. Non-W feeder, white kid, 99% MAPs, 5s for PARCC, 9A profile and 99% in CogAT.
**Exhales** |
We received our envelope today and our CES child was admitted to Eastern but not Takoma.
We are zoned for a great non-W MS, 99% verbal CogAT scores, and caucasian. We are fairly sure we will stay at our home MS and give up the spot. |
Are the numbers people are posting the MCPS percentiles (as opposed to the national percentiles)? My child's MCPS percentiles were quite low in comparison - in the 80's. Does that mean they won't even qualify for the "magnet" classes at the local MS? |
17:18 here again - the score I posed was for MCPS. I assume this is the number they're evaluating us on. |
Rejected from both, not even waitlisted. Feeder to Lee MS (crappy DCC MS).
97% V 99% Q 99% N 99% Composite. Straight As in 5th grade, 99% MAPs, PARCC 5s. WTF? |
17:24 here. Wow, congrats to the parents of these high-achieving kids! I am very impressed by these numbers, although it's hard not to think of my own child as remedial. Will take a deep breath! |
Great scores and clearly not a cohort issue. Wish ut made more sense. |
It has to be a cohort issue. Maybe there were 1-2 outliers 99th percentile everything and higher scores. PP with the kid with those great scores I echo your WTF. |
PP, call MCPS and demand an explanation! Don't give up until you talk to whoever is responsible for fielding parents' inquiries; ask them, point blank, why your child wasn't selected. |
Clearly not a cohort issue at the forementioned MS. It's not a W feeder so no cohort. The real problem (unlike the imaginary cohort isssue) is admission to the magnets is very competitive. There are roughly 12k kids in the grade and just a few hundred seats. |
