New thread -- actual MS magnet results

OP, are you willing to post your race? If you're not comfortable with that, I can understand. In reality, it shouldn't matter, but I wonder if that is affecting admissions.

Wait pool means he gets into Historical Inquiry into Global Humanities.

Stats: CES school with straight As, DCC middle school, CoGAT 99th verbal, 98th quantitative, 97th nonverbal. MAP Fall 2018 was RIT 250 math, 99th, 243 reading, 99th. 5s on PARCC scores.

Is anyone going to appeal? He just got a 270 on the winter MAP.

What is your feeder MS?

An Einstein-zoned MS.

Currently in a regional CES program on the eastern side of the county. All A's, including in compacted math.
CogAT: 99%V (57/64 correct) , 91%Q, 95% NV; 99% composite
Fall MAP-R: 252; Fall MAP-M: 246
Demographics: white, no special services (no FARMS, ESL, IEP, 504)

Home MS has one of the lowest numbers of "highly able" students identified in last year's test, as seen here: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/schools/msmagnet/about/MS%20Magnet%20Field%20Test%20Data%20by%20Sending%20MS.pdf

Are the cogat National compared or MCPS compared?

Sorry, that was the national CogAT. MCPS is 99V, 87Q, 95NV. Interesting that only the Q dropped between national and MCPS; perhaps it's an indicator of how many strong math students there are in MCPS.

That would be illegal.

Yes, clearly about being an outlier wherever you are. Congrats, PP!

I doubt they use race as a factor, but geography tells a lot.

Congratulations to PP. This is a strong evidence of "cohort" effect in decision making for middle school magnet programs.

Wait pool does mean she gets into Historical Inquiry into Global Humanities.

Stats: CES school with straight As, W-feeder middle, CoGAT 99th verbal (58 correct out of 64 #/attempted), 97th quantitative (43 out of 45 attempted, 52 total), 99th nonverbal (45 correct out of 57 attempted, 60 total). MAP Fall 2018 was RIT 251 math, 99th, 283 reading, 98th. I can't remember/find PARCC scores.

Bummer.

Your kid's stats are fantastic. You should feel great! There simply aren't enough seats in the magnets.

No, statistics don't work that way.

It has little to do with cohort but the reailty is there a couple hundred magnet seats for roughly 12,000 students.

People that use geography as an excuse are sour grape losers.

I have to agree.

My kid had a 99Q and 97NV for the Cogat and was rejected (which is fine, before someone screams about sour grapes). But, we are at a stronger MS, with a large cohort.

Thanks! Time to gather more information and think about whether the logistics are worth it. I think Eastern could be a great fit for my kid (and I think my kid would have been a strong candidate for that program from any MS) , but not sure the transportation and trade-offs are worthwhile. The fact that we also got the TP invitation makes me more hesitant about our home MS than I was previously.

For anybody who is wondering, the deadline to accept invitations is February 8. The TP open house is January 23 and the Eastern one is January 24.

Except for when MCPS has clearly stated that they are using geography (or cohort, or whatever you want to call it). And, when MCPS has clearly stated that they are NOT simply looking at high scores/high percentages.
