Received letter today. Results: wait pool for Eastern (which means essentially lottery ticket likelihood of getting in), not recommended for TPMS.
Wait pool does mean she gets into Historical Inquiry into Global Humanities. Stats: CES school with straight As, W-feeder middle, CoGAT 99th verbal (58 correct out of 64 #/attempted), 97th quantitative (43 out of 45 attempted, 52 total), 99th nonverbal (45 correct out of 57 attempted, 60 total). MAP Fall 2018 was RIT 251 math, 99th, 283 reading, 98th. I can't remember/find PARCC scores. Bummer. |
Sorry, but I wouldn't feel too bad, OP. Think of it this way - your kid won't have a ridiculous bus ride, and will have some extra time in MS to explore other passions. Maybe an instrument or a sport? Many more seats open up in HS. And, MS performance doesn't really have a huge bearing on where your kid ends up in HS/college. We are currently at a CES, and while it's great, it's not the best/most amazing/wonderful learning experience ever. I've already told DC that either way, it's not a huge deal if you do/don't get into a Magnet MS. Especially this year, with the new random criteria. |
Wow, I'm surprised your child isn't even waitlisted for Takoma with such great math scores! I would love to hear from someone whose child did get accepted to TPMS and what their MAP M is. |
How is 283 for MAP-R only 98%???? That should be like 99% for 11th grade. |
That is a bummer since your child sounds very qualified. Did this information come in an envelope or perforated form? Waiting for our mail to come, with some similar stats to your child but in a different part of the county. (Also I think you typed the MAP-R wrong, sine 283 isn't even on the charts). |
It's always nicer to be accepted than to be rejected. But there are opportunities she'll have at her home MS that she wouldn't have had at Eastern, just as there would have been opportunities she had at Eastern that she wouldn't have had at her home MS. It's what you make of it. Really. -person with 1 kid who didn't get into a MS magnet and 1 kid who did |
OP here. It came in an envelope, regular mail, thin (one page).
And sorry, PP, you're right, I transposed digits: MAP-M was 238, not 283! Thanks for everyone's kind words. I am really bummed for her, as she will be very disappointed and sad. I just wanted to post the scores/results as a reference in case others are curious. |
"283 reading, 98th"? |
Thank you for posting. |
My kid was also rejected. Not even waitlisted. CES with Straight As first quarter Non-W feeder Middle School CoGat - 97 Verbal, 99 Quantitative, 98 Nonverbal MAP Fall - 263 Math, 232 Reading I think my kid will be slightly disappointed, but overall okay with the rejection. Their CES teachers already warned them that last year, there was only something like 5 kids accepted from their CES. Versus the prior year, where there were about a dozen. Good luck to the rest of you who are still waiting for your mail! Rejection came in a perforated envelope, FYI. |
Perforated Envelop.
Reject to both (not even waitlisted) W-feeder school. 99% on age/grade on Cogat. Currently at CES. 99% MAPs (266 MAP-M, 243 in MAP-R) 5 in PARCC. Straight A's. Good luck all! |
Probably not the right “group” of kids MCPS is after. |
Just received our letter - invited to both Eastern and Takoma Park. Shocked about the TP invitation, which I wasn't expecting at all and think it is highly unlikely we will accept; I think it's a clear indication of the importance of cohort, as seen in my child's stats:
Currently in a regional CES program on the eastern side of the county. All A's, including in compacted math. CogAT: 99%V (57/64 correct) , 91%Q, 95% NV; 99% composite Fall MAP-R: 252; Fall MAP-M: 246 Demographics: white, no special services (no FARMS, ESL, IEP, 504) Home MS has one of the lowest numbers of "highly able" students identified in last year's test, as seen here: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/schools/msmagnet/about/MS%20Magnet%20Field%20Test%20Data%20by%20Sending%20MS.pdf |
Also received letter today. Nearly identical results to the OP: wait pool for Eastern but not recommended for TPMS.
Wait pool means he gets into Historical Inquiry into Global Humanities. Stats: CES school with straight As, DCC middle school, CoGAT 99th verbal, 98th quantitative, 97th nonverbal. MAP Fall 2018 was RIT 250 math, 99th, 243 reading, 99th. 5s on PARCC scores. Is anyone going to appeal? He just got a 270 on the winter MAP. |
What is your feeder MS? |
