my son is three and is allergic to antibiotics..he got both flu shots yesterday and this morning woke up with hives and lots of swelling and tenderness at the site of injection..zyrtec cleared up the hives but it was still quite scary.. |
My daughter is 15 years old received shot at 12:00 noon has hives from thighs to ankles at 9:00PM Called on call ped doctor and they said just watch for breathing problems and call in the morning to let her doctor know also told to give benidryl. I am a nervous reck. |
I found this site after a google search and I know its a forum for parents, but I thought I'd share my experience.
I am a 47 year old female with asthma. I get the seasonal flu shot every year and have never had an adverse reaction to it. I got my seasonal vaccine in early October, no problem. I got the H1N1 injection 10 days ago and have been dealing with an increasingly worsening case of the hives and wheezing since then. I called my doctor and he said benadryl is about all you can do for it. Well, I have been taking 2 tablets every 3 hours with no relief. Then suddenly they are gone only to reappear later. I had to go to the urgent care center last night because my entire body was covered including the top of my head, face, hands, they were everywhere. My peak-flows were also dropping. They said they had never seen anything like it. Two breathing treatments and 60 mg prednisone later they released me around 8:30 pm. I looked much better and my peak flows had returned to normal. Then at 11pm another breakout. Horrible, my entire body again. I took 2 benadryl then at 1:30am I took another. Slight relief until I woke up at 3am and had to take 2 more. Woke at 7 am and took another 2 tablets. Had a great day, no break outs. Took my scheduled prednisone and was I was turning the corner. NOPE! Starting to get another breakout and I'm wheezing. Just took 2 more benadryl and now I'm off to check my peak- flow. I am going insane...... ![]() I am so sorry for all the little ones going through this. My grandson had his first shot several weeks ago with no reaction, but now I'm scared for him to get the second dose. |
There's got to be some allergy there to SOMETHING. Hives are a histimine response -- allergy. To what, I have no idea, but something. And where is this Google cut-and-paste from? Seems weird... |
I'm wondering what would happen if my 9 month old get the H1N1 shot. I've been on and off about the vaccine. We are flying to South America in 4 weeks and I have to make the decision this week. |
I found this site DC urban moms and dads. This is not a cut & paste quote, but my own personal experience. I still had mild breakouts during the night and took benadryl 3 times. I understand this is a histimine response to something. I am just so frustrated with my doctor for not taking this more seriously. I can't imagine what kind of auto-immune response the H1N1 vaccine triggered in my body. The urgent care physician said if the hives came back after 10 days on prednisone then I would probably require testing of some kind. I'm on day 3 of prednisone and am still having breakouts. |
My 22mo. old son started getting hives 5 days after getting the H1N1 vaccine. The hives are mainly on his face, arms & hands. We have not changed any soap/detergent, etc and he is not allergic to eggs. The hives last for about 15 mins and then disappear and they reappear again hours later. More strange.... another 3 yr. old child at our day care is getting the same hives, in the same style, and his started 4 days following his shot. |
IMO, after knowing people who have had the swine flu, after reading this, we certainly are not going to get the vax. Sounds like the flu is a better bet than having little ones with hives all over their bodies. This flu has turned out pretty benign in the grand scheme of things, why inject something foreign in their bodies when the experts cannot even acknowledge or explain why it is giving people such bad hives reaction? I've had hives before due to an allergy that have lasted 24 hours, but not days on end like posters are describing. |
My son had the H1N1 vaccine and had shortness of breath about 3 days after the injection and hives all over 1 week after the injection. The hives are new for him and his pediatrition did document it. Bendryl every 4 hours is what I have been doing. I am worried now about the booster. It may be coincidence, but it is still interesting to note. |
It is a tough decision to make. My son did get hives from the H1N1, I believe, however, the bendryl every 4-5 hours is taking them away. He has bad asthma when he gets a mild cold, so I do not regret getting him the shot. My worry of him getting the flu and having complications exceeds my concern for the hives right now. If you have a fairly healthy 9 month old with no other health complications, simply keeping him/her away from sick people and frequent hand washing may do the trick. My daughter also received the H1N1 vaccine and had no side affects. |
I would certainly get it if flying with the little one. With the circulated air in the airplane and the exposure to where you're going, I think there's ample benefit to getting it. |

I also got a severe, itchy and painful rash all over after the h1n1 shot. It seemed the nerve endings on the top of my head and my feet were on fire. It started 4 days after the shot. NOT an allergic reaction. Several people are getting this reaction. Symptoms seem to go away over time, or get a prescription antihistamine from your doctor. The serum product info leaflet indicates that the drug has not been fully tested, and appears to contain other buffer ingredients that are apparently, not good for you, as in toxic...it is now available without the extra buffer ingredients for pregnant women and young children. |
i have an 11 month old also i brought her on wed to get the h1n1 shot and a couple days later i noticed a rash on her leg where she got the needle, she has some on her belly also. could this be from the h1n1 needle or what ??? should she get the second needle ??? |
