h1n1 shot reaction - hives

She has NEVER had hives before. I can not figure what is going on. The doctor said that if it was a food allergy, the hives would be immediate. These hives seem to like 2:00 am. Anyone know of hives that seem to be time-linked?

I also got a severe, itchy and painful rash all over after the h1n1 shot. It seemed the nerve endings on the top of my head and my feet were on fire. It started 4 days after the shot. NOT an allergic reaction. Several people are getting this reaction. Symptoms seem to go away over time, or get a prescription antihistamine from your doctor. The serum product info leaflet indicates that the drug has not been fully tested, and appears to contain other buffer ingredients that are apparently, not good for you, as in toxic...it is now available without the extra buffer ingredients for pregnant women and young children.

What does this mean?

My 3.5 years old son got red spots for three days; we thought he was allergic to something he ate, but he was never allergic to anyting before, and it has gone after three days so we gave him a shot of H1N1 a week later when there was no more spots on his body, but after that shot we noticed that he got hives every morning and night more than three weeks now and he still has them as of this morning. I gave him benedreyl and it goes away after 20-30 mintues, but they return in every night. I don't know is this the vaccine reaction or something he ate. Should I gave him a another shot.

My 8 year old had the H1N1 spray vaccine on Thursday 11/19 at his school. 2 days later he started developing bumps on his body. I took him to the Dr. on Monday and he told me he had food allergies. His diet is normal and he's never been allergic to anything! The Dr knew he had had the H1N1 vaccine, but never connected the two.. aren't Dr's aware of this reaction to the vaccine? Or are they not saying anything so that they don't alarm anyone???? I couldn't believe he was allergic to something he had eaten and so I took it upon myself to search the web and just like many of you, I've found reports from other the other part of the world about hives, but none here? Why is that? Can't anyone provide information about it? I tried calling the school and they gave me the county's# which rings for ever!

I just saw this article...

It doesn't state what the allergic reactions are, though.
I wonder if there is something in the vaccine that some people are reacting to.

I am from Massachusetts and found this forum as the only one that reported hives after the H1N1 shot. I am an adult (30 years old) health care provider who got the vaccine last Tuesday. I developed hives Wednesday and took some Benadryl- it got worse. I started Prednisone - but the hives continued. I was actually hospitalized for symptom treatment from Friday to Tuesday in order to manage the hives that seem to come morning and night despite heavy duty meds. I am now home tapering from oral Prednisone and taking high dose antihistamines prescribed by the allergist and dermatologist.

Did they said it was an allergic reaction to the shot?

I too rec'd hives about 2-3 days after getting the h1n1 shot. Hives are all over my neck/chin/head and face - extremely itchy. Never known to be allergic to thermosol, mercury, eggs, etc.
Thanks to whoever posted the bit on benadryl - even tho the hives returned. Atleast I can look forward to some relief after I get that today.
Yes, we should all report our symptoms using that Event Form for H1n1 vaccine reactions and to our doctors.
I'm glad I'm not alone in this debacle! Thanks all!

It sounds like a lot of us are all in the same boat. My 2 1/2 year old had hives all over her a day after she got the H1N1 shot and lasted a couple of days. The same questions when I took her in. Did she eat anything? Did you change anything? Well the answer was no. Even after telling them she had the H1N1 shot the night before nobody seems to point the finger to the shot! Absolutely she will NOT get the second shot!!! Has anyone found out why so many reactions such as hives?

I am a 41 year old woman, healthy. I got hives that were very bad 5 days after my H1N1 shot. I've never had them before. I still have them coming and going and tmorrow will be a week since they broke out. Benadryl helps. They said that it may last up to 6 weeks.

Good luck

My son is 12 and had the shot on November 4th. It is now December 2 and is still having the hives. I am wondering if it could be the shot the has caused these hives or something else.

I'm not a doctor, but I can't see how a shot is likely to continue to produce an allergic reaction a month later. I would go to an allergist to rule out other allergies, or at least start with your pediatrician. I think that a month of hives necessitates a doctor's visit, whichever you go to first.

I wonder whether it's the virus, not the shot. My DS, who has never had hives, had the H1N1 virus in late October - home from school for a full week, high fever, etc. One week after that he started developing hives on his extremeties, usually made worse by hot water (bath or shower). Benadryl helps temporarily, but they come back. There were no changes in soap, detergent, cleaners, etc. I'm wondering whether it's an odd aftereffect of having H1N1 flu.

Ya know, I think there might be something to this. I have had 3 friends whose kids have had hives in the past month or so. None have had the vaccine. I am wondering if it's just some virus that is causing them (like any other virus they get) and/or the H1N1 virus itself can cause hives in some people. Perhaps the "novelty" of the virus and our bodies react like it's an allergy (i.e., histimine response) bc it's so "novel"? I dunno, but I DO think it's notable that oddly enough, I have heard of these hive cases and it made me think of this thread.
