Oh. my. God. I thought DCUMers believed in science. It’s like I am stuck in a Pentecostal nightmare on this thread.
At least five posters have said being cold makes children ill. What the bloody hell. |
What is even funnier is the image one poster presented of a 13 year old boy walking around with a snotty dripping nose because he wants to look tough and mom is trying to be his friend. Hahaha! I would be far more concerned by a teenager who hadn't figured out how to blow his nose yet than a teenager who is wearing shorts and a hoodie on a 34 degree day. |
If your toddler is waiting for a bus, then you have bigger issues to address. |

A message of home for all you moms who are letting your kids wear shorts in the winter because (A) if they're cold, that's on them and (B) you realize, intellectually, that they respond to temperatures differently than you do:
At the end of the day yesterday, my kid asked for waterproof footwear. |

I have a SON who gets cold, and a DAUGHTER who does not. It’s really weird to see them together, dressed for completely different seasons. |
So you’re saying it works, awesome! |
OP. First, how old is your DD? Second girls usually run colder than boys. Most middle school boys have raging hormones are going through puberty. This makes them extremely hot. So yes, it will be normal for you to see middle school boys in shorts and a sweat jacket in the middle of winter going to school. Honestly, mind your own business, and take care of your own kid. Stop passing judgment on other people’s kids when you have no idea. Signed, a mom of a middle school boy who went to school today in shorts and a short sleeve shirt with a sweat jacket, who didn’t even want to wear the jacket out because he was already burning hot. |
| I picked up my MS son from school on Wednesday and noticed that many of the boys were wearing long shorts and hoodies. It was cold, windy, and damp but they didn’t seem to care. I think it’s kind of a macho thing, to show their toughness. I don’t get it, but hey - I’m a middle aged Mom, not a 13 year old boy. |
| Just curious, OP - did you wear a skirt yesterday? Will you wear one from now through March? Will your daughter? |
How about girls that go to private school. Some where sweats under, some don't. |
| I went to high school in MA. There was a kid from CA who defiantly wore shorts and at most a hoodie all 4 years, even through blizzards with 2 feet of snow on the ground. If it was below zero he *might* put sweatpants on. |

If you saw what my HS-age DD tried to wear to school today, you’d be so thankful seeing basketball shorts on your middle-schooler.

I'm a mother of 4 boys, the youngest is in middle school now. I also have two brothers. So I am pretty familiar with boys. They ALL wear shorts and hoodies year round.

+1 Natural consequences work! Early in the school year, 14 yr old DS didn't want to be bothered to bring a jacket and/or umbrella when where was rain in the forecast. He got soaked walking home. He lived (and didn't get a cold because that's not how it works). Now he checks the forecast and keeps his umbrella in his backpack. Had I *forced* him to put on a jacket/bring an umbrella we'd be in a face-saving power struggle and he would never admit he needed either. |
| They'll live for the few minutes they need to be outside |
