My heat right now is set at 65. My house is feisgid. I'm wearing fleece pants and a sweatshirt. My son is sitting in front of the TV playing xbox in his underwear. Do you think he is bring defiant? |
| When I was in high school I went to school one average winter day with my lower legs exposed. One teacher said to another in the hallway, “do those legs look cold to you? Brr!” It was a head scratcher to me because although I recognized that it was a “cold” day, I was absolutely not bothered by it. I channel that memory when I want to say something to my 13 yo about how he is dressed. I’m not going to force him to dress warmer for MY comfort. |

Lol!!!
My sons had LL bean gear, REI gear, falling out the closets and could care less! One scout trip I even packed for him ( you know because I care and love him just like you do) BUT he got really cold and had to be put in a car with heater for a bit. Leader said “ tell your mom...”” LOL!! The kid had gear for hiking Everest thanks to me in his backpack. He just too lazy too look/ stopping what he was doing. They learn. Of course, let’s blame the mother He’s grown and successful.

So true. When I helped with the Halloween party, I broke a sweat and had to open a window. |

I tell my boys all the time, "I'm cold. Put on a sweater."
|
That's interesting. When my son was a toddler/ preschooler it was very hard to stuff him into a coat inside. He overheated so quickly (I do too, wearing my coat into a store I'm feeling faint after 10 minutes and have to put it in my cart to survive). There were many times his dad and I ended up holding the winter gear and going outside, at which point he was ok with putting it on. He BEGGED to be allowed to sleep outside in a sleeping bag in the winter. This was even though I kept the thermostat at like 64. In North Dakota. He's in his 20s, and the only long sleeved shirts he owns are ones I give him for Xmas. |
Haha. I totally believe you that you do not get cold. Some people are like that. But how much do you want to bet that after reading this thread and finding out that young people do not tend to get cold like older middle aged women tend to get that it will suddenly become some sort of show of youth for a middle aged woman to go sans jacket on a snow day.... |

This explains the appetite.
And here's WaPo: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/why-your-kid-may-not-need-that-big-puffy-coat-but-the-hat-is-essential/2014/01/06/6f5f45cc-6c00-11e3-b405-7e360f7e9fd2_story.html?utm_term=.35b89cb4444a The part about athletes (or any intense activity) is worth keeping in mind. Key should really be what the odds are the kid cold be stranded with no access to warmth. In that case, have the coat, and the mittens, and the hat, and the wool socks available even if not wearing. |
Oh I MADE them take their warmer stuff on Scout camp outs. The temps can get mighty bitterly cold at night. But to school? Nah. |
Cold exposure can do wonders for weight loss. |
| My brother wore shorts almost year round. My son's school has a uniform but the first thing he does when he gets home is strip down to his boxers. In the winter, he will wear a robe in the basement while he plays PS4. |
I am unsure how exactly my son is being defiant. I truly don’t care what he wears and don’t nag him about it. Defiant - he is doing it wrong. |
DP. 65 is not 30! I wouldn't blink an eye at someone in shorts at 65. When it's close to 30, plus blowing winds, like today, nobody is THAT hot to be wearing shorts outside. OP, my theory is, the 'shorts-in-the-middle-of-winter' is just a cool look for those boys, for whatever reason, and they are sticking to it. There are days when they are truly okay, and then there are days when they are freezing their balls off but, hey, what can you do if you're stuck at the bus stop already? So, no, while these kids truly might feel hotter than middle-aged women on a regular day, no one is 'comfortable' with bare legs at 25F! Unless you are a yeti, or something. |
NP, but for inside an house is freezing. I dont even keep it at that in summer It's too cold and makes me put on a sweatshirt and pants. I definitely couldn't sit around in my underwear. Maybe run on a treadmill, but just sitting around, I'd be cold. |
| OP, you clearly don't have teen boys. It has nothing to do with looking cool, and everything to do with their own body temperature/metabolism. My sixteen-year-old boy radiates heat 24/7 and has for years (actually, my 50-something husband is the same way). If it's cold, and both watching football on the same couch, I can put my cold feet inches from my son's body (if he doesn't shoo me away), and still feel the heat radiating. |
