Agree. I made my DH a chocolate cake from scratch for his birthday. It was so much better than anything from a mix and so much better than anything from a grocery store. It was better than cakes from bakeries as well. |
Homemade cakes are great for close family. If it’s someone I don’t know very well and they made a homemade cake-i’m simply not eating it. When you are supplying a cake for an event it makes everyone more comfortable to have a store made/bakery made cake. Also not particularly convenient to make a homemade cake for 30 or more people. |
If you are scared to eat cake, your comfort is low on my list of priorities |
Hmm. I really don't think you know what a good cake is. The fancy ones may just have had better decor. That's OK, it's not your fault, they're really hard to find in the US. One day you'll try a really good French, Korean or Japanese cake (because they built their own recipes on the original French) and you'll know the difference. They have way less sugar, and they put all their efforts into the crumb/texture of the cake and the taste. Not with artificial ingredients.

Definitely not scared to eat cake. Scared about how little some people care about food safety like washing their hands, using non expired ingredients and having a clean prep area. |
+100 And not petting your dog while you are cooking or dog/cat hair on the counters. Cats roaming the counters. Picking your teeth, etc. Some people are groos and have not concept of hygiene or washing their hands. YUCK!!! |
This is a fearful mentality. Good thing you never eat out. Or get takeaway food. Or prepared food anywhere. Or travel. Or be with people in general. Back on topic. A straightforward box cake is fine. I've had my share of stodgy homemade cakes too. |
The taste is very different. I lived in Germany and disliked the desserts. Black Forest cake is gross. They have no flavor. They look incredible and you think it’s going to be great. I only eat one bite, because it’s so disappointing. I feel the same about Korean dessert. Just too bland. If you like American crème brûlée, cookies, brownies, or pies, the level of sweetness is much more intense than European and Asian desserts. I do enjoy wegmans and balduccis desserts. Wegmans cakes, fruit tarts, and macaroons are delish. Balduccis chocolate cake is really good. Whole Foods used to have a yellow and choclo layer cake that was amazing. I also like their chocolate mousse. |
Pastries by Rudolf is my favorite. I realize it’s isn’t grocery store cake, but I like it better. |
You all are nuts. You should see some of the people making or touching your food in restaurants and grocery store bakeries. |
And you are a dumbass. You ask your private chef to have one delivered to you from Austria on your private jet. No one “hops over to Austria” to get a birthday cake. |
Asian desserts are way too bland and not worth the calories IMO. trader joe’s started selling those mini japanese cheesecakes and everybody was raving about them. They tasted like…nothing. And also still loaded with calories so I really don’t see the point-it’s not like they are healthier. |
last time I checked I have never seen a cat in the wegmans bakery. But of course not everyone takes safety 100%. But the bakeries in grocery stores (the good ones) are out in the open and you can see the workers working. They are wearing gloves and at least look like they are being safe. Unlike aunt claudia who uses baking soda that expired in 1999 and drops all the ingredients on the floor while also licking the spoon as she bakes. |
Some are. Some are not. Just like homemade. And expensive bakeries. Wegmans is better than 99% of homemade cakes I have been served. |
You are fearful. Very fearful. But do what you want to do. |
