What is it like sending your DC to a majority/plurality asian school?(Churchill/Wootton area)

Not OP... I don't find OP's post insulting to the "different cultures". He/she is wondering what the atmosphere in W schools is like in terms of hyper-competitiveness. That doesn't mean OP doesn't value cultural diversity. Maybe OP doesn't want their DC to be in a pressure cooker environment and so is asking what it's really like in such schools.

A good way to ask that question would be, "Are schools in the Churchill/Wootton area very competitive?"

+1000 - Ask about the school climate if that is your concern.

"Competitive" - I don't think so, but perhaps it depends on which W school. I wouldn't consider the climate at Churchill to be competitive. My children always could sign up for the courses they wanted. Every child is different and they chose courses based on their areas of interest versus what other children decided to take.

My complaint would be:

1) substandard instruction particularly in math

2) there has been an attitude from school staff in the entire cluster that since you have a 20854 zip code, it is your job to pay for supplemental services to get your child through school

3) STAY CLEAR of the school if your child has a disability - go private for that one to save your child and save your sanity. The Special Ed department fails to implement IEPs to the point you need to pay for private services anyway. You have pointless meetings then nothing happens except another meeting the next year. Parents are not equal members of the team and administrators do everything to achieve their pre desired outcome. Teachers do not know the concept of confidentiality and your child will be bullied. If I had to do it all over again, my SN child would have never stepped foot into Churchill.

Churchill's ranking is high just because of the socio-economic background of the neighborhood. Parents are highly educated and will hire tutors when their child is not learning in the classroom.

There is also drugs, drugs, and more drugs inside the school. However, that is probably an issue in all schools today.

As another Churchill parent, I agree 1000% with the poster above!

Wealthy schools have more high end drugs, and issues are swept under the rug by wealthy parents.

There isn't such a thing as "western culture" either.

Yes, there is. Talk to Asian immigrants.

I agree to a point -- but OP could've just asked about Wootton cluster and not brought race into it.

pp here..

I think it's because it's generally well known that schools with a lot of Asian Americans tend to be more hyper-competitive and have more over achievers. As a group, they out perform all other groups.

I think some people are being way too sensitive.

True that. Now its come down to not even being able to ask a question which merely mentions a race... Can't you see that liberals with their P.C culture is the reason Trump is thriving?

PP here.. but I find it ironic that when liberals say unPC things about Trumpsters, then that's being "mean" and "rude". Sorry for the political side tracking. And now back to the regular schedule program.

That's as reliable as talking to US-born white people about "Asian culture" (or "European culture" or "African culture" or "Latin American culture").

And yet multiple posters have said on this thread that the schools in Clarksburg, which have a lot of Asian Americans, are not hyper-competitive.

Clarksburgh HS has 19% Asian Americans.

http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/glance/currentyear/schools/04249.pdf

Churchill has 27.7%
Wootton 37.1%

Compared to the W schools mentioned in OP's post, Clarksburg HS doesn't have a high % of Asian American students. It's even lower than RM's.

But in general, I would say HS with a high % of wealthy families will be more competitive, add a high % of Asian Americans, and it will be more so.

So you've never asked a bunch of Asian immigrants about "western culture"? And most US born white people would have no clue what Asian culture even is because most of them aren't exposed to Asian culture much, other than maybe via their local Chinese restaurant.

I'm the PP you're responding to. Actually, I have. That's why I said what I said.

hm.. maybe those folks have never been exposed to other western cultures other than American.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_culture

Western culture is characterized by a host of artistic, philosophic, literary and legal themes and traditions; the heritage of Greek, Roman, Germanic, Celtic, Slavic and other ethnic and linguistic groups. Christianity including the Roman Catholic Church,[3][4][5] Protestantism[6][7] and the Orthodox Church,[8][9] has played a prominent role in the shaping of Western civilization since at least the 4th century[10][11][12][13][14] as did Judaism (particularly Hellenistic Judaism and Jewish Christianity).[15][16][17][18] Before the Cold War era, the traditional Western viewpoint identified Western civilization with the Western Christian (Catholic-Protestant) countries and culture.[19][20]

Clarksburg ES: 37.6%
Little Bennett ES: 29.4%
Wilson Wims ES: 43.7%
Cedar Grove ES: 38.9%
Rocky Hill MS: 27.4%
Hallie Wells MS: 34.6%

In all 6 schools, "Asian" is the category with the most students.

Churchill swept problems under the rug because the last principal didn't want the problems reflected in school data. She did nothing to keep drugs out of the school including getting the known dealers out of the school.

It's easy to blame parents and broadly paint the whole community as "wealthy". Many of us are middle class. We also have Section 8 families at our school for those who do not know. I would say parents in our community regardless of income want drugs out of Churchill because that is the main place our children are exposed to the influence.

That's nice, but ESs is not where most of the hyper competitiveness exists. And eventually, all those ES students end up at HS together.

Also, if you want to compare at the ES level, Wootton still has it beat:

Stone Mill 50.9
Travillah 45.9
Lakewood 45.5
Cold Spring 43.1%
Bells Mills 29.9
Seven Locks 21.5
Dufief 26.5
Fallsmead 30

OMG.. most of you are not middle class, and the section 8 housing is tiny in that cluster (less than 5%). Same for Wootton.

I live in the RM cluster, 20854. This area is not mostly middle class.
