As a W parent, this thread really makes me sad. I hope OP doesn't move to our community. Our school has major problems, but one of its strength is respect for different cultures.
Not OP... I don't find OP's post insulting to the "different cultures". He/she is wondering what the atmosphere in W schools is like in terms of hyper-competitiveness. That doesn't mean OP doesn't value cultural diversity. Maybe OP doesn't want their DC to be in a pressure cooker environment and so is asking what it's really like in such schools. -signed an Asian American parent
A good way to ask that question would be, "Are schools in the Churchill/Wootton area very competitive?"
+1000 - Ask about the school climate if that is your concern. "Competitive" - I don't think so, but perhaps it depends on which W school. I wouldn't consider the climate at Churchill to be competitive. My children always could sign up for the courses they wanted. Every child is different and they chose courses based on their areas of interest versus what other children decided to take. My complaint would be: 1) substandard instruction particularly in math 2) there has been an attitude from school staff in the entire cluster that since you have a 20854 zip code, it is your job to pay for supplemental services to get your child through school 3) STAY CLEAR of the school if your child has a disability - go private for that one to save your child and save your sanity. The Special Ed department fails to implement IEPs to the point you need to pay for private services anyway. You have pointless meetings then nothing happens except another meeting the next year. Parents are not equal members of the team and administrators do everything to achieve their pre desired outcome. Teachers do not know the concept of confidentiality and your child will be bullied. If I had to do it all over again, my SN child would have never stepped foot into Churchill. Churchill's ranking is high just because of the socio-economic background of the neighborhood. Parents are highly educated and will hire tutors when their child is not learning in the classroom.
As another Churchill parent, I agree 1000% with the poster above!
