What is it like sending your DC to a majority/plurality asian school?(Churchill/Wootton area)

Students are interested in academics and doing well. Involved parents are there to support their students. Most good students are involved in at least one extra curricular activity in school or at home - sports, band, music, theatre, clubs etc. It is a competitive environment and students are busy after school and weekends. Participation in AP classes is pretty good.

LOL - I'm glad you know who I am and where I have been. If it was the public security meeting advertised to parents, then I was there. If you are talking about another meeting that parents were selected to attend and a public invite did not go out to the entire school, then you are right, I probably was not there.

I've also advocated to Central Office to have text message alerts throughout the county so parents are not dropping off children to what could have been a violent situation. My children and I did not check emails before leaving the house that morning. The MCCPTA also supported the use of technology such as text alerts. I think MCPS is working in that direction.

I will give Churchill a pass on the evacuation issue to begin with. I think all high schools on that given day would have had the same problems. The Superintendent and MCPS deserve the credit for actually working on campus security and observing drills at schools so they can be evaluated and improved.

There are other issues in the school that he did not respond to as Interim Principal. He was basically keeping the chair warm for a few weeks while Dr. Benz was out. No real action. Frankly, he was probably underwater and not prepared for the job. I just thought the PP who praised Rohner would have a more specific example of his leadership to back up the post.

He was interim for a few weeks! were you expecting him to change the whole culture and way of doing things? Like he could just take the reins and declare "NOW I"M IN CHARGE" and subvert the system Benz has had in place for decades and upend the MCPS administration like he's super man?

I might add that the most important thing he did at that meeting was to apologize and take responsibility for the failures and actually directly answer questions that were posed to him. Something I have never seen or heard from anyone in an administrative role in MCPS ever.

There were some apologies and urgent action needed on an issue while Rohner was intern. He was as good as Benz - not in the building and no response. Couldn't find the time to return phone calls. Forget having time to meet with parents.

MCPS track record regarding how they breed these people is consistently flawed. We will see what changes happen in the next school year then we will have data to make a judgement on. Problems in the school are fixable. It just takes leadership to do so.

To go back to the original question those are all excellent schools. You really couldn't go wrong and your DD would have a great, high-achieving peer group. I don't know what you mean by "competitive" in the classroom but there are more kids able to handle higher level material probably because many parents are very vested in their kids' education. It's not just about Asians. Some of these schools have a high percentage of Russian immigrant parents, many with Ph.Ds, and similar from parts of Eastern Europe. There are more children at these high immigrant schools that do after schooling than in some equally wealthy areas that are filled with more non immigrants.
