Loehmann's replacement

I literally just said this out loud today!!! No store has matched their selection. They had some great buyers stocking the store.

I think that's what killed the rest - once you get bigger, it's hard to source inventory of the same caliber for all those locations, so they got flooded with crap at the end.

I live in NYC. Still mourn for Daffy's and Loehmann's, just got to go to Century 21 for first time last week - how did i now know about Fox's?!?

PP. They only have 3 locations - UES, [ungentrified] Brooklyn and somewhere on Long Island. I am very familiar with the Brooklyn store, don't know how the UES compares. Their website is not much to look at, the good stuff is in the store, not online.

Forgot to add that "my" Loehmann's was the one in Flatbush, before they expanded to Manhattan and other nice places. Brooklyn Fox's reminds me of that place not only because of the communal dressing room and, ahem, curt service, but also because of the Brooklyn ladies who will tell you what they think of the stuff you are trying on, whether you ask them or not. Oh, and the website is atrocious.

Lohemans was the best! No comparison to any other not even Century 21. Heart brken they went out of business. Best store!

Oh my god, my people. I got a Prada nylon messenger bag from the Loehmanns close to Barney’s in Manhattan in 2002. Still use it constantly, and it was a huge splurge for me then. I have a Vitamin A bikini I still wear at my big girl age from that same store. Memories.

I took my DD to the reopened C21 in lower Manhattan in the fall and there is no quality there in any department - there were some random deals in Women’s shoes. That’s it. It’s so sad and a waste of time IMO. But now I’m going to go to the Fox’s! Thanks to PP for the tip!

So where have you been shopping? Just paying more at regularly priced stores?

I loved Loehmann's.

I shop online now, looking for off season bargains. I buy a lot of stuff at Land's End and JCPenney online. They are basic things, good quality, no logos. I used to think JCP was super tacky, but for basics like black and white t-shirts and pajamas, the prices can be fantastic off-season.

I shop weekly at a Marshalls near me and monthly at a TJMaxx that's a little further away.

On occasion you can find a Longchamps bag or some very nice designer pants at TJ/Marshalls, but you have to look.

I found the best deals in early February (NOW!), but you have to paw through a lot of junk. I love doing that, but most people hate it.

I've found $200 leather boots for $28, a $300 wool coat for $30, etc. They were buried in the junk.

TJMaxx and Marshalls used to be great with very low prices, but now they sell mostly made in China crap (clothing mostly) at much higher prices.

Yeah, I miss Loehmann's!! I bought some beautiful designer outfits there at very low prices. Unfortunately, those outfits are now out of style or too small as I've gotten thicker with the years, sadly.

I just wear basics now, very simple blacks, whites, neutral tan and beige with a few pops of color here and there. Wearing cheap clothes in basic colors can look OK if you accessorize with jewelry and designer scarves, good shoes, etc.

Also, for the ex Bostonians, Frugal Fannies still exists, but only has one location.

There used to be a Frugal Fannies around here (DMV) a long time ago, but I can't remember where.

It was in Rockville...near Twinbrook?

Hit or Miss, lol. I miss Loehmann's too.

I have very fond memories of that communal dressing room! Ha ha. I will say though, that when the collective of critical strangers told me that I looked good — they meant it! I, too, really miss that store, and the original Century 21. I didn’t know about Fox’s though. This might be just the nudge I need for a shopping trip!

I was out west once picking through clothes at a store that I can’t remember the name of. An elderly woman looked at me and said in a thick lower east side new York accent “I tell ya, this is no Loehman’s”. I said “what is?”
“This is no Loehman’s” became like a saying for me.

Love this.

Also love that this thread keeps getting revived. One day there will be a worthy answer!
