Loehmann's replacement

Frugal Frannies! Loved it at Braddock Rd. Beltway exit!

I find I spend less overall if I just buy things regular retail.

Once I have a brand/style that fits I’ll look on Poshmark if I need more/a replacement.

When I moved to Palm Springs a lifetime ago, I knew I’d be driving back into Orange County to go to Loehmans and then realized there was a Palm Springs location. I miss that store to this day. My girlfriend used to call the LA location “The Mother Load.”

Lol! I actually had some pretty fun -- and funny -- experiences in the Loehman's dressing room. I once went to one of the original stores in the Bronx. I found some great things to try on. I also found some wonderful supportive and realistic critics. By the end of it, thanks to their suggestions, I left with some great stuff.

I really like Nordstrom Rack, although, like many stores, it's not as awesome as it used to be. Century 21 was truly awesome. While I shop at Marshall's and TJ Maxx sometimes, I rarely have the effervescent excitement of finding something truly wonderful.

tldr: Closest for me is Nordstrom Rack, especially for shoes.

+1

Yes! So true! Miss that vibe - and help!

Also, for the ex Bostonians, Frugal Fannies still exists, but only has one location.

There used to be a Frugal Fannies around here (DMV) a long time ago, but I can't remember where.

Herndon, at the clock tower?

There is no Loehmann’s substitute unfortunately. As others have mentioned, Century 21 is great and you can find some good stuff at Saks Off Fifth.

Such a shame. They had a great runway section - bought a lot of good items over the years, ones I still wear.

Anonymous wrote:Since this thread has been revived, Fox's in NYC is still kicking. This is the last surviving of the great discount stores because they resisted the temptation to scale. I think that's what killed the rest - once you get bigger, it's hard to source inventory of the same caliber for all those locations, so they got flooded with crap at the end.

I live in NYC. Still mourn for Daffy's and Loehmann's, just got to go to Century 21 for first time last week - how did i now know about Fox's?!?

The original Century 21 has reopened in downtown Manhattan, earlier this year. Unfortunately, their satellite stores in Brooklyn and Yonkers and on UWS have not. The Brooklyn store could be killer as well as UWS while the Yonkers store was hit and miss.

Saks Off Fifth is simply not consistent. It can be the Mother Lode as someone referred to Loehmann's upthread or it's just dumpy, dumpy, dumpy. That said, I now have a semi regular errand in that part of NYC, so I stop in and do a quick peruse for any finds.

I think the plan is to re-open at some point in the old Mazza Gallerie space. They had originally planned to stay open, but I guess they decided that remaining open during the construction wouldn’t work.

I love that people keep reviving this thread. Hopefully we will one day find a true substitute! I miss Loehmanns so much! I still remember where I was when I heard the news of its closing. My girls friends and I all came home from our grad schools for one last shopping trip together.

Love this post. I too miss Loehmann's and Filene's! I feel like you could score new and interesting brands, esp from Europe, and designer deals were much lower than Nordstrom Rack. I once scored two fabulous silk jackets/tops for $150 each by Max Mara. $1500 retail. That kind of thing would still be 700-800 today at Off 5th or Rack. Happy to hear about Century 21 in NYC and Fox's.
