How many left-lane slowpokes have been fined under new Va. law?

I wish Maryland would pass this law. I'm from Maryland and I have never understood why Marylanders don't comprehend that the right lane is for driving and the left lane is for passing. If someone wants to go faster than you it is your duty to move to the right.

I am in it during rush hour (with required occupants) and f@ckers don’t move out of my way. The regular lanes are bumper to bumper and hov os moving with nobody in front of the car in front of me but they are exactly at the speed limit. Is HOV (far left) considered left lane under this? Please tell me “yes”.

No, it is not considered left lane. HOV cars do not have to move over so you can go 75 MPH.

When I’m paying $18 to go one way on HOV/hot lanes at 65moh you are not the regulator if I choose to go an extra 10mph over the speed limit.

Where did I say I was regulating what speed you could go? Your post indicated far left lane in HOV, I assumed you were talking about 66 E/W during rush hour. In the 95 express lanes, you definitely need to move over to the right to let cars pass, as there are 2 lanes in these Express Lanes.

Trust me, I stay out of the left lane. There was a 6 car pile up in the left lane of 66 East tonight near Nutley. Guess no one wanted to move over....sucks for all those other people wanting to get home from work.

Those are usually caused by someone going too slow and the chaos of everyone trying to get around him/her. Seen it many times.

But the people at fault are still the ones "trying to get around." Someone else driving slowly is no excuse for unsafe driving by anyone else. If I am on the highway and get behind someone going too slowly in the left hand lane, I either safely and legally pass on the right, and if that isn't possible, I match the speed of the person blocking the lane. I don't lose my cool and act like an idiot. That's what causes accidents.

Just stay right, pass left and you'll be fine. Don't try to overthink it.

I don't think it is overthinking to suggest that people not act like idiots.

The slow driver in the wrong lane AND the fast drivers aggressively trying to get around them are BOTH In the wrong and both at fault when those happen. Police ticket speeders and aggressive drivers for their part, now they will ticket the slow speed bump in the middle of a highway as well.

I am guessing that you didn't read all of the quotes above. This poster was responding to the notion that 6 car pile-ups are caused by someone going too slow. And that's just not how this works. The slower driver is in the wrong, but much less so than the person driving recklessly to get around them. It is still incumbent on everyone to drive safely. Period.

I read all the quotes. They are equally to blame. Anyone moseying over to the left lane to drive slowly did it at least semi purposefully as it would be easier to go that speed in one of the right lanes. They had to cross into faster traffic to get there. So yes, one person intentionally driving less than the speed of traffic in the fast lane, knowing full well that their actions will cause people to go around them in an unpredictable way, is as responsible as the person who does it. They are in violation of traffic laws and doing something they know causes accidents, just like the person speeding around them.

Wrong. Sometimes the traffic isn’t heavy. They pull over to pass someone even slower, and faster car roars up from behind impatiently. They generally don’t merge into the left lane when they are already slower than the right lane. And no, they are never equally at fault for someone else dangerously driving.

Maryland does have a law but it’s one of the weakest left lane laws in the country. They introduced a better one last year and this year but it doesn’t look like it passed.

I think it will even cut back on traffic jams! How many times have you been prevented from changing lanes because some dumbass is driving below the speed limit in the left lane? Happens to me st least once a week.

Exactly. That’s why there is so much more unnecessary congestion around here than other metro areas. Too many slow MFers clogging up the roads. It’s always a relief to drive in other areas where people actually move.

I agree. I had to drive a lot yesterday across this area and SO many cars just meandered through lanes, didn't respond timely to light changes, no turn signals and just acted like they had no clue where they're going. Why does this happen? Don't we all have phones with GPS? The drivers here are so bad.

So you’re a vigilante enforcer, going 55 mph in the left lane, huh? Hope you get ticketed for your dangerous driving.

As a general rule this (rule) makes complete sense BUT it isn't an excuse for those that think they have the RIGHT to do 80mph because they think the person doing 65mph is IN their way. This rule wasn't created to enable or legalize driving well in excess of the posted speed limit. It was designed to keep people driving BELOW the posted speed limit from bottle-necking traffic flow. None of the people voting for this legislation were sanctioning speeding. Those of you interpreting it that way should speak to your local police department if you don't believe me.

Nope. I usually do about 70. And when someone faster comes along I move to the right as soon as it is safe to do so. Often the traffic to the right is going slower which is why I'm not weaving left to right (but remain in the left lane until I need to yield the way to someone faster). But I don't freak out when some wreckless a$$ comes flying up at 80mph and rides 1 foot from my bump while I signal to move over. Since we are BOTH breaking the law by speeding in this example, there's no justification for riding peoples bumper at 70mph. Just my opinion, I dont expect everyone to like it
