likelihood of a government shut down?

We have enough stashed away that we could handle a shut down of couple of months, plus I'm private sector so I'd still be getting paid. But dual-income feds with an area-typical mortgage and not enough padding could really start hurting quickly.

Then maybe they shouldn't live pay check to pay check.

Not everyone is a GS-15. Hard to live on a GS-7 pay, much less have a lot in savings.

I know I'm going to sound stupid (and that's only because I am), but what exactly is a government shut down and how/why does it happen? I'm a foreigner and I'm not sure how this works, but I keep hearing the term a lot lately.

absolutely. I'm a fed and single parent and while I do have savings to sustain us -- it wouldn't be a great scenario.

Know what you could do? Get an interim job. I did during the last shut down. Babysat at $20 an hour because I can drive and am experienced with infants.

how did you find work on such short notice and without being able to give anyone a date after which you'd have to go back to work? sounds dubious to me

My neighborhood listserv has constant posts for babysitters. Once I worked with one family, my name was passed on to many other people. I still do occasional babysitting on Friday and Saturday nights because I get $25 an hour for feeding the kids, putting them to bed, and throwing in a couple loads of laundry. My kids are pre-tween and are happy to stay with DH. In a few years, they may be able to do some of the babysitting.

Income was reported by everyone on a 1099.

As a single parent -- I wouldn't be able to babysit friday and saturday nights. I thought you meant you were babysitting during the work day hours.

As I mentioned in my post, I babysat during the day when the government was shut down. Now that I am back to work during the day, I sometimes babysit on Friday and Saturday nights. When my children were younger, two nannies brought their infants with them while watching my children. No reason you can't do this.

Think of it as what happens when a coup occurs in your old country.

I don't really need to do this though. I stated we have savings -- but a shutdown is still un-nerving for those of us with lower HHI. If I could pick up a 9-5 during a shutdown - that would be different but I don't see how that could work with the unpredictabliity involved. Others have mentioned issue with ethics.

On the other hand, it'd obviously suck to not even have the option to use sick leave and then not get paid.

I’m still putting the chances of a shutdown pretty low. Like 10%

You probably won't get back pay if you are unable to work because you'd otherwise have been on leave anyway.

But then she wouldn't be charge leave, right?

You don't get charged leave you just get backpay because they have to treat all furloughed employees the same. I was on my honeymoon for part of the last shutdown so I know.

I'm pretty sure you have to clear that kind of stuff with ethics too.

I hate the GOP. They always shutdown the government because they can’t get their way. As a contractor, I won’t be paid.

Not PP, but I also really don't get it. Am I accurate to summarize that all gov employees can't work during the shutdown, but they still eventually get all their back payment; hence seems like an extended free paid vacation for gov employees on the taxpayers dime. How does that help the economy?

They don’t have to get back pay but historically they have. And it doesn’t help the economy. It definitely hurts to halt operations for political tantrums. If someone sells it to you as something else, they’re lying.
