likelihood of a government shut down?

On the other hand, it'd obviously suck to not even have the option to use sick leave and then not get paid.

I’m still putting the chances of a shutdown pretty low. Like 10%

Weird post. It’s not about you.

We have enough stashed away that we could handle a shut down of couple of months, plus I'm private sector so I'd still be getting paid. But dual-income feds with an area-typical mortgage and not enough padding could really start hurting quickly.

Then maybe they shouldn't live pay check to pay check.

absolutely. I'm a fed and single parent and while I do have savings to sustain us -- it wouldn't be a great scenario.

Know what you could do? Get an interim job. I did during the last shut down. Babysat at $20 an hour because I can drive and am experienced with infants.

how did you find work on such short notice and without being able to give anyone a date after which you'd have to go back to work? sounds dubious to me

Well, I guess I care more about my personal situation than I care about yours. I'm not sure why that's weird.

Plus, don't you have to report that income? And when you get backpay, how do you reconcile earning money while also getting federal pay for the same hours? I remember that was the big debate during the 2013 shutdown.

The longer it stays shit down, the worse trump looks, so let's hope they can keep it closed for six months

HB-1 visa people can be cleared quickly with an Executive Order. Get some Indians in here who learned how to govern from people who worked during the Raj. This government would be tickety boo in no time

My neighborhood listserv has constant posts for babysitters. Once I worked with one family, my name was passed on to many other people. I still do occasional babysitting on Friday and Saturday nights because I get $25 an hour for feeding the kids, putting them to bed, and throwing in a couple loads of laundry. My kids are pre-tween and are happy to stay with DH. In a few years, they may be able to do some of the babysitting.

Income was reported by everyone on a 1099.

I'm less worried about the impact on our family personally after reading this - neither of us work for Fed Gov't, but we do live in DC... https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/why-dc-residents-dont-need-to-worry-about-a-federal-government-shutdown/2017/04/25/ce9f0300-29cc-11e7-be51-b3fc6ff7faee_story.html?utm_term=.9f69fa231fe1

As a single parent -- I wouldn't be able to babysit friday and saturday nights. I thought you meant you were babysitting during the work day hours.

Thanks but some of us would like to work and get paid.

It's not likely and not going to happen.

Well bless your heart! Why didn't the rest of us think of that? Oh, that's right, we're supposed to get sign-off from our Ethics Officers before we take jobs in addition to our federal jobs and the Ethics Officers aren't working!

Or my abity to plan and live within my means.

But sure, call names if you think that will fix your personal budget

If you can't see life beyond your circumstances you are incredibly ignorant. You assume that people who will be hit hard by this are lazy or stupid. Do you feel that poor people are all lazy and stupid?

Government workers are lazy and stupid, so that counts.

Troll alert!

Normally I would 100% agree with you, but these are strange times indeed.

Interesting that multiple families would issues 1099s for babysitting. They only have to report it if they paid one person more than $1500. You must do a sh*t ton of babysitting.
