likelihood of a government shut down?

It was stupid and irresponsible when republicans did it and it will be stupid and irresponsible if democrats so it. They have until June now too

That was my gut reaction but I did not post initially because I'm not super well informed on these things.

Agreed. 19-year government employee here and there has never been a time like this where we've had to guess our employment status literally every other month. Talk about a moral buster...

Seriously. I've only been in gov't for 2.5 yrs (and already want out) but damn if you want a CR, do a CR for at least 6 months so we don't play this game every 3 weeks.

We have enough stashed away that we could handle a shut down of couple of months, plus I'm private sector so I'd still be getting paid. But dual-income feds with an area-typical mortgage and not enough padding could really start hurting quickly.

Then maybe they shouldn't live pay check to pay check.

Note she said months. As the non fed in a couple, I'm not OK with my emergency fund going to political bullshit. That's not what that's for.

Actually that is what an emergency fund is for.

Chill out you will get back pay

If you can't see life beyond your circumstances you are incredibly ignorant. You assume that people who will be hit hard by this are lazy or stupid. Do you feel that poor people are all lazy and stupid?

And FYI, we are a 1 Fed, 1 nonprofit who will get shutdown without pay and we won't be hurt by this. But I'm just not an angry, miserable, nitwit.

How is this privilege showing? I see this comment so often, but how do you know the person is "privileged?"

And you can't see beyond your circumstances to see that people make dumb, irresponsible financial decisions. Go look up figures on how much Americans save, including for retirement, it's shocking and not in a good way.

I'm a fed, but we all know it's not just Feds who get shat on during a shutdown. And it's not all contractors pulling in 6 figures either. Most of the custodial staff are contractors, and they probably don't make enough to make it through a shutdown unscathed.

Additionally, not all Feds are overpaid GS14s and 15s. I'm a GS 11, and while I'll be OK my emergency fund is small so a prolonged shutdown would be painful (because I'm a single mom and my child has to eat, and the mortgage must be paid). I'll admit to having no sympathy for the dual GS 14/15 earning families who have over mortgaged themselves, but not all of us have that much money.
