Then maybe they shouldn't live pay check to pay check.

How is this privilege showing? I see this comment so often, but how do you know the person is "privileged?"

I'm a fed, but we all know it's not just Feds who get shat on during a shutdown. And it's not all contractors pulling in 6 figures either. Most of the custodial staff are contractors, and they probably don't make enough to make it through a shutdown unscathed.

Additionally, not all Feds are overpaid GS14s and 15s. I'm a GS 11, and while I'll be OK my emergency fund is small so a prolonged shutdown would be painful (because I'm a single mom and my child has to eat, and the mortgage must be paid). I'll admit to having no sympathy for the dual GS 14/15 earning families who have over mortgaged themselves, but not all of us have that much money.

Very fair points.

Just pointing out I don't think it's fair to assume the dual-income pp is a 14 or 15 couple. Sure, plenty are, but I work with few GS 11, 12 couples who appear more responsible financially, living within means than 14s or 15s.

On the other hand, it'd obviously suck to not even have the option to use sick leave and then not get paid.

I’m still putting the chances of a shutdown pretty low. Like 10%

You probably won't get back pay if you are unable to work because you'd otherwise have been on leave anyway.

But then she wouldn't be charge leave, right?

Between this and our crazy frigid air snow/ice storms, making my life stressful.

They're doing everything they can to shut it down. We can only hope.

The longer it stays shit down, the worse trump looks, so let's hope they can keep it closed for six months

I think they will pass ANOTHER continuing resolution. One is already in the works.

Not to mention all the restaurants, stores, etc. around federal facilities. I work in Woodlawn, MD and it already struggles, without large daily influx of SSA and CMS employees, the businesses in the area really feel it.

Or my abity to plan and live within my means.

But sure, call names if you think that will fix your personal budget

If you can't see life beyond your circumstances you are incredibly ignorant. You assume that people who will be hit hard by this are lazy or stupid. Do you feel that poor people are all lazy and stupid?

Government workers are lazy and stupid, so that counts.

That's not true. During the last shutdown people could not use leave so she'd be eligible to receive back pay the same as anyone else. But honestly I highly doubt we'll see a shut down.

Of course there's something in the works, but that doesn't mean they have the votes.

absolutely. I'm a fed and single parent and while I do have savings to sustain us -- it wouldn't be a great scenario.

What on earth for? Just pass a budget. Or a CAR through October, which would be the same thing.

I heard some of the house GOP and Dems in the senate won't go for a short-term CR -- but that's just today.

Agreed. 19-year government employee here and there has never been a time like this where we've had to guess our employment status literally every other month. Talk about a moral buster...

I like the freudian slip here.

Know what you could do? Get an interim job. I did during the last shut down. Babysat at $20 an hour because I can drive and am experienced with infants.
