19 YO son came home with a tattoo!

I can't believe you think tattoos are associated with drugs and alcohol. That's ridiculous. Tattoos are nothing but art. My DH has full arm sleeves and too many tattoos to count. He works for the President (not my fave president but still). Plenty of successful people have tattoos. You just don't know about it because they wear dress clothes to work!

And I should add that my DH is only a social drinker (probably 2-3 drinks per month) and has never touched a drug in his life. Oh, and he's BLACK!

OP here -

I'm sorry I come across as being unreasonable, but I am just angry and unsure what to do.

My reasoning behind pulling our funding for college is that this incredibly immature decision makes his degree worthless. Having a tattoo makes him unhirable outside crappy restaurant jobs. No professional setting would hire him, so why should we spend thousands of dollars on a worthless piece of paper? If he's happy being a tattooed thug working as a server then that's fine, but I'm not okay with throwing more of our money towards his now-worthless degree.

Plus, while we can afford to cover his education, personally I feel like the money would be better kept in a savings account for his two younger siblings who have not thrown their employment future in the gutter.

Again, ideally, I would love to see him grow up, get some loans, and should he get lme and DH would likely be willing to pay for those loans once they come due, assuming he comes to his senses and removed the tattoos.

You missed the boat. My parents said that they wouldn't pay for college if I got a tattoo. You didn't say that beforehand so you can't do anything about it. Just counsel him about when he gets his next one (because he will) to be smart about placement and content.

Where exactly is this tattoo? Will it be visible during a job interview?

YOU ARE BEING ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! "Unhirable" outside of crappy restaurant jobs??? No professional setting will hire him? A tattooed thug? Are you f'ing crazy? Ask your fellow coworkers in your elite workplace to roll their damn sleeves up. Wow...I've never actually gotten upset in my years of reading DCUM posts, but you've really struck a nerve.

Unless the tattoo is a swastika or is ON HIS FACE, you are not just being unreasonable, you're being stupid.

OP, unless the tattoo is on his neck or face it really won't be that bad. Just tell him if he gets anymore, then you're done paying.

I hope your DS gets 100 more tattoos and develops a cure to cancer just to prove you wrong. You're insane.

OP you are insane. I have 3 tattoos plus I had a nose ring when I started work and I am a very successful individual. I am pretty sure I will make $500k this year. Crazy! I can't believe I can make any money or have a professional career in sales interacting with people every day with my tattoos! Gasp! The horror!

He knew we didn't condone tattoos well before he got one, and made no mention of wanting one since he was 16 and in a stupid 'tattoos are art' phase. I just thought it would be obvious that intentionally making yourself unhireable would forfait our funding of his now-pointless education. But yes, maybe I should have made that abundently clear before sending him to college. But again, at no point did I think this would be a worry.

Jesus H. Christ OP you are insane. I am a professional with 3 tattoos. I even had a nose ring when I started work! I am pretty sure I will pull in around $500k this year and I work in sales where I interact with other people on a daily basis. Clearly having tattoos has not hindered my job prospects or how I turned out. Get a freaking grip!

By looking at your consistent spelling and grammar errors, I would assume that you aren't in the most desirable career position yourself. Where is this tattoo located and what is it of?

I hate hate hate tattoos, but you are being absurd. Do you want to risk a lifelong relationship with your son over this? I would say about a fifth of my friends have a tattoo and all of them are insanely successful people. Most of them got them when they were around your son's age. Some regret it and some don't. You sound unhinged and I am glad you are not my mom.

OP has a point that most tattoos kids get at 19 they regret later. At least all 7 of my friends who got theirs before 25 regret it... though they all went on to get more or have the original modified. But what's done is done and he's an adult who will have to deal with the consequences. I don't judge anyone for tattoos unless they are on their face or neck, because then it's just anti-social "i don't give a f" tattoo... but I do judge the design/content of the tattoo, which are actually usually pretty stupid.
