Be honest. Wouldn't your family truly prefer the Atlantis Resort over Martha's Vineyard or Maine?

Totally agree with this!! I love Caribbean in winter and closer east coast beach in summer.

+1

going to the Caribbean in the summer is cray

For some of us, going in summer is what makes it affordable. And the climate is less variable there so it's usually still low 80's there even when it's 90's here.

I agree with that but I also don't think then you'd make a post saying Atlantis is way better than MV or Maine? That's who I was responding to.

True, I wouldn't. But I bet my kids would love Atlantis. We won't be going there but we do take them to Typhoon Lagoon when in Disney. (Gasp! Yes we take them to Disney sometimes!)

We do both types of vacations. You wouldn't go to Atlantis in the summer, which is when you would go to Martha's Vineyard or Maine. I'm a big fan of Atlantis. It's good enough for the Obama kids. My kids love it. They also love going to New England. We all love seafood and my boys love to go fishing.

Not a fan of Martha's Vineyard. Yes, its gorgeous, but it seems filled with a few rich people and a lot of people trying to act rich. Love Maine. Have never been to Atlantis and don't really ever see it happen.

I couldn't agree with you more. My answer will be neither. Atlantis is definitely a big no for me. It's crowded, touristy, lacks culture, and overpriced. Nantucket is too sleepy and boring for my taste. However, it will be the perfect place to vacation to when I'm a senior citizen.

Have you been? My kids beg after each commercial they see on it.

I have. Food poisoning everywhere. Staff is apathetic and theft is rampant. Never again

OP I have been and wouldn't necessarily paint a dismal picture - if you want an all-inclusive style resort type vacation it is nice. The food is certainly overpriced and was nothing to write home about, but none of us got food poisoning. The rooms are nice - again, probably not the luxury you'd hope for with that price but that's how it goes with tourist destinations. The beach area itself is rather small, but obviously the water is pretty...it's your typical Caribbean beach experience (clear water, no real waves, warm). You can't really walk on the beach or anything (as in, go for a walk on the beach). The pool area is cool and obviously lots of fun for kids - there are multiple BIG water slides and a lazy river which is not particularly lazy. Both of those details to say I don't know that I'd go until my youngest was 7/8 or so, and a strong swimmer too. In the pool area there are lots of places to explore; little pools with turtles, stingrays, etc. Agree that the crowd in the pool area tends towards the type of people you'd see at 6 flags, not that there's anything wrong with that. The dolphin "experience" (which you kind of have to do if you're there, I guess) is pretty much an overrated, expensive photo op.

I would agree that the staff is apathetic as compared to other vacation places I've been in the Caribbean, but did not experience any theft.

All in all, I would agree with the assessment that if you're looking for a beach vacation in march or April, and have elementary school kids, it's fun. But wouldn't be my choice for a summer beach vacation. I also feel like, having been there once, I don't have a burning desire to go back. Whereas MV our family looks forward to every year, we have all our little traditions and feel like there's so much to do there.

Haha this sounds like an overpriced nightmare!

I have thought about Atlantis but it dos seem overpriced. I prefer Caymans or StThomas.

I go to Maine almost every year. Between the hikes, lakes, swimming holes, local water park,....It's very awesome.

Casco Bay islands off Portland, ME. I think it's too crowded over 4th of July weekend, but otherwise it's not too crowded.

thanks friend

We love the Caribbean, but I don't think we would enjoy Atlantis because of the crowds. We prefer secluded beaches. We also don't want to be stuck at a resort 24/7.

For sand that never gets hot, the #1 beach in the country, I'd go to Siesta Key, rent a condo or a house, walk or bike to restaurants and shops

How long do you have to visit? What are you thinking about doing when you're there?

I finally bit the bullet and read my first EH book last week and loved it! (The Steamship Authority heavily advertise her books on the ferry and I always resisted out of principle, I guess, but i can see how she's a good ambassador for the island!

I am partial to Nantucket as I grew up spending summers there (my parents have a home there) and even got married there. I've only been to the vineyard a few times, but they are both special in different ways.

The Vineyard is cheaper / quicker to get to ($17 r/t, 35 minute ferry; Nantucket fast ferry is an hour and $75 r/t, although if you do a day trip M-Th, the price drops to $50 I believe.). Don't bother with the slow ferry to ACK if you only have a day or two as the slow ferry is just shy of 2.5 hours each way.

I find the food and going out scene better on Nantucket . There's truly only one downtown area ('Sconset doesn't count) and it's right by the ferry. MV is a lot bigger and spread out so you have to plan a bit better...but there's more to "do" on MVY.

I thought Atlantis had something for everyone. We stayed in a suite at the Cove. I'm a hotel snob and thought the Cove suite was fantastic. Cove and Reef share a private pool and beach area that only guests staying in those hotels have access to. My kids did the little squirts program where they got to feed sharks and stingrays. It was not all inclusive, which I personally prefer. I don't mind paying extra for better food. We had a mix of expensive and casual dining. Nobu was good. Can't remember the other restaurant names but I was pleasantly surprised that the food was actually decent. My kids liked going to the free movie theater and doing the crafts around the resort. We took daily stroller walks around the Dig Aquarium. Spa was great. We'd get starbucks and hang out in the waterpark area but could retreat to our private quite beach.

You don't go to Atlantis for culture but it is a lot of fun. I thought it was a perfect family vacation. We travel often, maybe 10 times per year. We enjoy Atlantis and Disney. We also do Italy, France, Iceland, Japan, etc. Atlantis was probably the absolute easiest where everyone had a good time. We took our kids to Monte Carlo and the Amalfi Coast. They enjoyed Atlantis a lot more. We are going to Maine at the end of the month too.

Personality differences.

I've been to the Atlantis in Dubai and it is not my scene but I can easily see why young children would have a great time and the parents are happy because the kids are happy.

Martha's Vineyard / Nantucket / Maine / Cape Cod is my natural fit. Older kids always have a great time swimming and in the ponds and cycling and taking the ferries and having local ice cream and seafood.

I wouldn't say no to an Atlantis vacation but it's not high on my list and I would always go for a northeastern summer trip over Atlantis in the summer, and there are other parts of the Bahamas and Caribbean I'd prefer for the winter months.

Last but not least, I am not judgmental. Go to the place that makes you happy.
