DS loved Atlantis - and if you stay at the Cove, you can get a break from the grubbiness of the theme park, as 22:58 said. We've also gone to Maine/MV & Nantucket many, many times and love all of them. If he had to pick only one, DS would choose Atlantis because he has free run of the place and so many other kids to hang out with. I don't mind Atlantis - the ocean is gorgeous and teaming with cool things to see while snorkeling.
For me, it depends on the season. July/August? You couldn't pay me to go south; I hate heat & humidity. Spring break? DH hates cold, so no way would we do Maine or NE. Thankfully, those aren't the only places in the world. |
| I just googled Atlantis. Is it the resort in the Bahamas? |
| Good Lord no. |
| Nantucket is a snooze fest. Atlantis is gaudy. We don't do either. We enjoy other Caribbean locations over the Bahamas, but mostly have enjoyed beaches in Bali, Greece, Hawaii, Belize and Phuket. |
| Please list all the fun activities there is to see and do in Martha's Vineyard. I was invited to go there at the end of the month with another family. However, it looks like it may be boring for my family. My family likes to travel and we already visited Hawaii, San Diego, London, and Paris this summer. Will a place like Martha's Vineyard appeal to us? I keep looking at pictures on Trip Advisor and reading reviews, but nothing sticks out for me or has that WOW factor. It seems like the activities are geared towards provincial types of families. If you have middle school age children, please tell me what types of activities or places do you visit while you are at there. Thanks! |
I went to school in Boston and went to MV and Nantucket as a college student. Thought it was a total snooze fest. I'd probably like it a lot better now that I have sons. We like to relax, eat seafood, hang out on a boat, etc. |
Agree with this. I wouldn't object to going to Atlantis for spring break some year (although we usually go skiing), but we spend the summer on the Cape so definitely prefer Cape/Nantucket/MV for summer. My kids feel the same way - they have grown up spending summers on the Cape. They are happy to go all sorts of places though - skiing, beaches, US cities, international cities. It doesn't seem like it has to be binary. Go to Atlantis, to MV, to Vail and to Paris. |
Maybe not. It's a fun place to relax, do family things, do outdoor activities like swimming, kayaking, biking, sailing, etc. If your children prefer the museums of Paris then they may be bored on MV. There is some history there, but not a ton. You can maybe do a day on Nantucket at the Whaling Museum and a few other small historical sights there. |
Hawaii!!
|
| I love Hawaii but the big drawback is travel time from DC especially when traveling with young kids. |
It's not a beach with no waves. |

We went to Beaches in Jamaica last spring as a last-minute family trip and my kids (ages 3, 5 & 7) keep asking when we are going back. I don't blame them, it was a fantastic family Place and so easy for everyone especially the parents. It was extremely relaxing. Our typical vacations are 2-3 weeks in Europe (we rented a house in Provence this summer, last year we went to copenhagen, Stockholm and St. Petersburg which was also fantastic). We also love MV and Nantucket but dh isn't a huge lay around on the beach person, he prefers to have something to do every day.
I have no interest i Atlantis, though. It looks like a bigger and tackier version of Beaches. |
We did Hawaii with a 3 and 8 year old. They loved the flight. We went through ATL on Delta and their first class was perfect for them! |
Presumably, your kids would be hanging out with their friends. Do they really need a WOW factor? |
| I've been to Atlantis, and it is beautiful. I've also been to New England. While NE is charming in its own way, the beauty of the Bahamas will beat it every time. Every time. The colors of the water, the warmth of the ocean, the laid back island chill factor. We love it! |
