Be honest. Wouldn't your family truly prefer the Atlantis Resort over Martha's Vineyard or Maine?

Thank you. Should be in the moron forum.

They're just completely different. One is a more quaint and laidback experience, one is a highly commercialized / never leave the resort type vacation - which is not bad, it's just totally different. It's waterslides and splash pools and dolphin kissing and beach DJs and on-site dining versus strolling the streets of cute little towns, biking around the island, stopping for ice cream, reading on a blanket on the beach, family dinner on the porch. It's just a completely different experience

Even in terms of the beach, the calm warm clear water is awesome but it, too, is totally different than the refreshing, salty, big (bodysurf-worthy) waves that some of us love. I really am not saying that the latter is better, it's just a different type of beach experience and both are great

Yes. You make a good point, OP.

Not everyone likes the beaches. There is plenty to do in Nantucket that can fill your time without even going in the ocean or sound.

It's a good thing that there's others things to do, because the beach there is frigging cold.

It's funny, I think it's just depends what you're used to. I grew up in this area and my parents would battle every year, because my mom wanted us to go to the OBX where all her friends and their families were renting houses, and my dad (who grew up in New York) thought the water there was like a bathtub (way too warm) and could NOT see the appeal

Follow up question: do you pick vacation destinations based on what kids or adults want? Discuss.

We don't go to either. Atlantis sounds crowded with bad food and overpriced. Maine sounds lovely but boring for the kids.

Not in August.

Hahahaha excellent point. Questionable parenting there.

Your description of Maine is incredibly different of what we are doing for 2 weeks here in glorious weather.

But--we all love the outdoors. We swim in gorgeous lakes and my kids love the cold ocean.

I have been eating pounds of lobster and haddock nothing fried. My 9-year old is going to grow a shell soon he loves the lobster so much.

We are near a small town with better restaurants than anything in DC. The population is highly educated. No dumb white trashy lume most of Atlantis.

I never want to come home.

Glorious 75 degree days and a light sweater at night.

No swamp ass and stifling humidity.

There plenty to do at Atlantis too. I've actually been there a half dozen times and never been to the beach.

That's great but, I still prefer Nantucket, thank you.

Do you have kids? Ask them if they want to go to Atlantis this year instead of Nantucket. I bet their eyes will light up.

Np who took your challenge and asked the kids. They had never heard of Atlantis and thought I meant Atlanta. They chose Nantucket.

I hate to state the obvious, but if you were having that great a time you'd not waste it writing on this forum. live the moment!

My parents live on one of the Maine islands and my daughter loves going there. Beach anytime you want because it's two blocks away, playing with the free-range (sometimes feral) island kids, diving off a splintery dock a sunset, climbing around on the rocks exploring tide pools, movies in the community center, walking to the ice cream shop. Maybe she would like Atlantis, but I don't know that the joy:price ratio would be worth it.

Ha!

My kids love the feral children.

We free-range here. Kids can walk into town. They have a real sling shot. They have their own fishing poles. They play board games at the local game store.

9 and 12. They love the freedom which they don't have back home.
