Fine then tell that to DCPS: "You need to create more options for my "advanced learner" because I pay taxes dammit! But not Banneker, too many black kids." |
Call it whatever. I would not send my kid to a private school on a scholarship either for the same reason. I am not a fighter, not a revolutionary, not a world changer. I also believe in capitalism and dislike socialism. |
lol right. Which proves that people here are actually racist and it's just not trolls. I don't even know how this thread title is even a question of course people here are racist. They may not use racial slurs in public and they may vote blue but they refuse to even look at Banneker high school because their child would *gasp* be the minority. And they are *shocked* that van ness isn't title one because isn't that EOTP and don't poor people live there!?!?!? |
Okay well then leave it up to the rest of everyone to make the world a better place for you and yours. |
Well I'm glad you can admit that you like and use the privlidge that you were born with. |
I have mixed feelings about what's expressed on DCUM. As a black mom, I found it depressing - literally - to find so much classism and racism on display. The very idea that just showing up makes my kid an undesirable problem causes psychic damage I can't even describe. But I can't deal with a reality I don't know about so I've come to appreciate anonymous opinions I've read here over the years. And the reality is, while we all have considerations for race and class when choosing schools and neighborhoods, I have to consider an entirely different set of factors from those who rely on SES. Someone in a post upthread mentioned the way some parents treat their kids. For me, that's actually one of the top three factors I consider in thinking about schools and where to live. People who put greater weight on superficialities like race and income are less likely to weigh intangibles that matter more for success. I've got enough examples among family and friends to know that superficial judgment happens at every SES level with people from every cultural background, so I do my best to avoid it myself. But for my own well-being and that of my family, I also try to avoid people and places where it's the most commonly used barometer. And I feel pretty fortunate we have options. A lot of people - at all SES strata - just don't. |
I didn't know blue collar is considered privilege now, but I will take it. |
We might have different views on what makes the world a better place. We |
Yeah, when you inch toward calling me a racist, you're damn right you hit a nerve. You better back off because you don't know me, you don't know what neighborhood I live in, and you don't know what school choices I made. Take your "those kids" crap and shove it. I've got no more time to waste with you. You don't know anything about me, but you judge me. I'm done with you. |
I just looked up some news articles about Banneker's history, and I saw this ...
Are Bannker's admissions still based on a quota system? |
Good for you for telling the PP to shove it. Your initial post was completely reasonable. Really tired of posters judging others based on limited information and their own prejudice. |
Yes!!! Exactly!!! Keep it 100% |
the theme of this thread is racism and classism. this PP seems to be arguing that DC schools are inherently unsuited to her child. The racism/classism comes through loud and clear. |
You clearly need to work on your reading comprehension, because that's not what she was saying. |

I'm black and live a short distance from Banneker. It's obviously a good school, though I have no idea if my elementary school kid is cut out for it. I also don't even know if he'd even want to go there.
But there are so many other factors that we'll consider as a family when the time comes. Social well-being, safety, commute, extra-curriculars. I don't judge any other family using the same criteria and some of those take Banneker out of consideration when there are other options. I'm not sure why some people forget that. It's almost as if the one thing that would truly make Banneker the best school is more white people. And I know that's not true. |
