I truly do wish that this wasn't an anonymous website. I wish there were screen names so I could put a name with a racist "face". Because this place is full of microagressions. And then fragile feelings when called out on said microaggressions. As a white woman, it's embarrassing.
I have mixed feelings about what's expressed on DCUM. As a black mom, I found it depressing - literally - to find so much classism and racism on display. The very idea that just showing up makes my kid an undesirable problem causes psychic damage I can't even describe. But I can't deal with a reality I don't know about so I've come to appreciate anonymous opinions I've read here over the years. And the reality is, while we all have considerations for race and class when choosing schools and neighborhoods, I have to consider an entirely different set of factors from those who rely on SES. Someone in a post upthread mentioned the way some parents treat their kids. For me, that's actually one of the top three factors I consider in thinking about schools and where to live. People who put greater weight on superficialities like race and income are less likely to weigh intangibles that matter more for success. I've got enough examples among family and friends to know that superficial judgment happens at every SES level with people from every cultural background, so I do my best to avoid it myself. But for my own well-being and that of my family, I also try to avoid people and places where it's the most commonly used barometer. And I feel pretty fortunate we have options. A lot of people - at all SES strata - just don't.
