Both regions are close to DC. I guess the effect of DC on both regions are pretty much the same. I heard of many bad things about Moco, such as increasing property tax rate, sanctuary city controversy, weakening public education system, etc. I also hear good things about north Virginia, like good education qulity, etc. Then why are there more houses on market in north VA, and cheaper? Does this meaning that people are leaving VA. And more people are move in MoCo?

Because more international Asian investors buy in MoCo. They MoCo schools have better reputation
and that creates greater interest among the investors.

So why are SAT scores going up in NoVa and down in MoCo? I know a few schools like Wootton are largely Asian but it seems like there are more Asians in Fairfax (over 207,000 per 2015 Census estimates) than in Montgomery (about 148,000). I hope those "international investors" in MoCo don't get burned.

What are the sat scores for the top 4 schools in MOCo and Fairfax? Be interesting to compare.

I'd. E curious about this as well.

Whitman 1897
Poolesville 1862
Churchill 1851
Wootton 1818
MoCo 1631

TJHSST 2198
Langley 1851
McLean 1821
Madison 1789
FFXCo 1672

Because it is a large magnet, TJ has a bigger impact on the test scores of other schools in FCPS than the Blair/RM magnets have on the scores of other schools in MoCo.

Thanks. So THIS is why people say Langley, McLean or bust. I never really got it before

This doesn't even make any sense. TJ is a magnet, it only makes sense to compare it to the scores within the Blair magnet (not the whole school). Which means MOCO comes about ahead.

MOCO is also bigger and more diverse than Fairfax county

To the OP, it is generally more useful to compare smaller, similar areas, like Bethesda/CC to Arlington.

Bethesda/CC prices went up last year while Arlington went down - but I think they are generally rise at similar rates

TJ as a magnet has 1200-1300 kids. And still pull the highest SATs in the country. Blair magnet is what? 400 kids tops? TJ is big enough to pull a significant number of kids from each high school. Comparing TJ and Blair's affects is silly, because TJ is multiples in terms of size. TJ pulled 70-80 freshmen from Chantilly alone last year. Get back to us when Blair pulls hundreds of kids from a single school.

TJ is closer to 1800 kids.

Blair isn't the only magnet that draws kids in MOCO.

Comparing Blair with TJ is Apples and Oranges. Blair's entire STEM magnet is roughly one-fifth the size of TJ?

To TJ's credit, it benefits far more kids in FCPS than Blair benefits MCPS.

OMG Blair Troll. There is no source for this. Neither TJ nor Blair publicly report in Harvard admissions for privacy reasons because there are less than 10 from either school most years. I'm a TJ parent and I cannot find out with certainty how many kids got into Harvard last year. It's that way with many Ivys. TJ only consistently hits double digits with "STEM" IVys (MIT, Stanford) and Yale, Columbia and Brown. The rest are mysteries. For some reason a lot of TJ kids get into Yale each each year. Special STEM program? At any rate, TJ kids tend to track top 10 engineering. The are going to Cal Tech, U Illinois Champagne, VA Tech, GA Tech, CWRU etc. in high numbers. Often on scholarship. Which is good it's a STEM school.

But, TJ is doing fine on college admits. I'm sure Blair is too. Never have I seen such hoopla about a program that serves less than 100 kids for the whole county. Sidwell is less obnoxious than Blair.

TJ is a STEM magnet. Not an apples to apples comparison to an IB magnet like RMIB to TJ STEM magnet. You have to compare Blair to TJ, but like a PP noted, TJ is a whole school magnet and Blair is not.

lol

The problem is you.

Mmm... not really. I'm the one who had been teaching ES at home. Thank you for the compliment, though.

So, 400 STEM magnet students subsumed within a chaotic 2,900-student school located at the eastern edge of Silver Spring, halfway between Wheaton and Langley Park, as opposed to a thriving and recently renovated STEM-only magnet with nearly 1800 students that is consistently ranked the nation's top high school.

You can kind of see why the Blair poster is so insecure.

Blair beats TJ in any real competition. The only thing that TJ has over Blair is test score(on paper) because Blair score consists of the Magnet and the general population.

No. It's the top STEM program in the area. The school making that's making TJ eats dust.

Insecure Maryland immigrants who haven't learned yet how to use articles properly seem to abound and they make MoCo even less attractive.

Not less attractive than NoVa.
Immigrants make this country great. No wonder MD is great and VA is a cesspool.
