Unless you have an older sibling at Brent, you might consider adding Tyler Traditional too. Maybe Capitol Hill Montessori too? And if you really need public preschool, the Appletree near RFK and Friendship Chamberlain. There aren't many sure things on Capitol Hill these days though.

No sibling. And yes, we will likely add those and others to round out our 12 choices. However we will probably stay in private daycare if we don't get one of our top picks.

Van Ness will be difficult for out of bound students to get into for PK3. Van Ness did away with the Early Action PK3 (Guaranteed Access for inbound students) program since they don't believe that they will have enough seats to accommodate all of the in-bound students.

No, they did away with it because the school isn't Title 1. Not because of demand.

I am confused by all the comments on lists that have WAY less than 12 schools about people "wasting" slots. If someone doesn't have 12 schools they'd like their kid to attend, there is no negative consequence to listing a school they will never get into. This poster has 6 total schools. Even if they take some advice from here and list 2-4 others, they STILL have free slots. And no one knows what VN will look like in its first non-early action year, so if it's their 2nd choice, why on earth wouldn't they list it??

I think the poster was trying to say that Van Ness has gotten very popular and that they most likely will have in-bound students on the waitlist.

I'm the poster of the list above. We are very familiar with the situation at Van Ness and realize it's unlikely. However we are very close to the school and so figure it is worth listing. Also we will likely fill out our list with other schools (to get to 12 total) but ultimately will likely stay in daycare another year if not successful with our top picks.

Keep switching 4-9. Not including IB school because we have other options if we don't get a spot anywhere.

I *think* Dorothy Height takes all applicants--maybe by policy or by demand, check on that but if it's the case, you might want to move to to #12, unless you truly prefer it over Seaton and Tubman. Neither of those too many (if at all) OOB students. Of the schools listed, which is closest to you? And which schools will be out of your way, commuting wise? That may help with some reordering.

I don't get why you wouldn't include your IB school? Are you K and above? Or just completely uninterested in your IB?

We've heard MV won't have any spots after sibling preference for pk3. The carless commute to Stokes feels too far from Parkview area.

Good point about DH, thanks. They do have 60+ spots. Wasn't able to visit Seaton but Tubman and DH are probably equal for us. I know it's unlikely to get in OOB in general, but we don't have others we want so might as well try.

As a former teacher at Stokes, I would not rank it very high at all. There are multiple issues at the school that are masked by admin and others. I think it's a positive environment for teachers, however I don't think it's better than many of the schools people have ranked here. I also think Seatin should be ranked above Tubman and other surrounding DCPS schools.

We struck out in the Brent IB lottery two years ago, and most other Ward 6 programs, and landed at Appletree LP. Appletree didn't work well for us - kid was often in trouble, considered a discipline problem and an academic straggler. Other LP families there had similar experiences. To us, the Appletree curriculum was a K curriculum, not a preschool or prek curriculum. Once we got to Brent for K, teacher considered child well-behaved and an advanced learner. Looking back on it, really wish we'd stayed at the Hill Preschool or gone elsewhere, even if the commute wasn't so hot. It wasn't unusual for our kid to come home from LP in tears (after not having received enough "stars" to get a "prize" at the end of the school day, like most of the other "scholars").
