It makes an for an interesting mix of entitlement without actually contributing anything.

Nailed it. For better or worse, people in SF and NY are on the cutting edge of change. People in DC are just obnoxious rent-seekers.

+1. I can tolerate the self absorption of say, Los Angeles, because it truly is a creative capital that, for every entitled Beverly Hills real estate broker, has struggling artists and people that truly do move the world forward. But DC is just... a bunch of middling wonks making slightly above average off the teat of the government, who still insist on shopping at whole foods and getting the granite they want.

It's really the worst.

I'll never understand this weird dc hate, you all must never really explore the city. It sucks that we're the trash can for the country's politicians but that's the people you send us and their entourage.

What's wrong with picking out granite??? That's not even that luxuriant lol

Are you the same person who has been camping out on this thread and arguing with literally everyone? Dude, get a life.

You think there's only one poster here with a different point of view? Why do you call that "arguing"?

I don't get the DC hate either. Yes, Congress people are a bunch of douchebags, but that's b/c all the people who live in the 50 states send them here. If you actually LIVE in DC, you realized it's SO MUCH MORE than just Congress and the Hill. And Washingtonians hate Congress even more than other Americans.

There is one poster who has a very "distinctive posting style" and just likes to camp out here and go back and forth. No matter how many disagree with them.

It's obnoxious as hell.

But yeah, everyone knows that. The sad fact is, it doesnt have much more than Congress and the Hill. That's why DC is only known on a national level for government. Sad but true.

True. My mom grew up in San Mateo and it is awful there now.

Yep. Hillsborough was founded as a haven for the rich limousine liberals who wanted the benefits of SF without the "undesirables" right in their backyard.

Please. That's still extremely expensive for SF. You can find the same in NY but the vast majority of people aren't living in 5k studios.

And? You dont have that in DC. Not to the same level. And dont try to lie and say we do.. everyone knows we just dont.

Never said that. I find dc inexpensive. But I don't think the question was about the cost of real estate or rental rates.

But that's indicative of how out of touch it is. The fact that only the privileged can afford to live there.

Exactly. I'm a millennial. I looked into moving into San Fran. If you want to live alone, you are absolutely looking at spending $3000 monthly, studio or otherwise. That's not a joke, it's not an exaggeration.

If you are willing to share with roommates, you may be able to find something as low as the $1600 dollar range. But that's a maybe.

That effectively keeps out anyone who does not have a lot of money and is not, by nature of income, spoiled to a certain extent.

That kind of rent is not something we have to deal with in DC.

So what's your point? Have you ever lived anywhere expensive? I lived in Manhattan and the rent you quoted seems reasonable. Sf is a very small city with some high paying jobs. There are plenty of other cities to live in the us.

I should think the point is fairly obvious. This is not "reasonable" rent in SF- this is the base level, access point, bottom of the barrel. You CAN find cheaper stuff in NY, and certainly in DC, but you really cannot in San Fran. This is what makes it unusual.

Yes it's unusual but does that mean it's out of touch?? Does expensive necessarily mean out of touch??

Certainly. Especially when the only people you interact with are others who can afford to pay that kind of rent. Not to be rude, but duh!--

Thanks to the way the public school system in SF is set up, families who use the public schools (& I know several relatively wealthy families who do) are actually much more likely than those in most other cities/areas to have regular interactions with an economically diverse grouo of people.

SF schools, yes, are diverse if they are public. Marin County and Palo Alto, not so much.

I'm the np you accused of trolling (who has not posted since).

There is a local artist culture if you take the initiative to go find it. Check out Columbia heights and h st. Just cause you're not part of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Did you ever go to artomatic?

How about capitol steps? How about the national gallery of art?

The spirit of dc isn't known to the rest of the county but that doesn't mean there is no spirit. I don't know much about Jacksonville or Anne arbor or Lincoln bit that doesn't mean those cities have no personality.

Dc isn't that much different then the rest of America in that it's mostly filed with normal people working their best to have good lives (and if quinoa makes them happy why do you care that they shop at whole foods?). I'll never understand some posters on this site insisting that their lives of trying their best and doing their thing are lesser.

Every day I get to drive down the Parkway and look at our river and our monuments and I remind myself how beautiful it really is and how lucky I am to have what I have. But I guess I'm just some stupid vapid dc resident.

All of these affluent strongholds have their fair share of insulated pricks and brats. At least NYC an DC has some pretense of people using their brains to finance their lifestyles. The upper middle class are actually playing at a career.

LA is full of aspiring creative types that are getting by on family money, or just poor dipshits spending all of their money on hair extensions, soulcycle, coaching. It's a town full of dreamers and the predators that exploit them.

SF & Portland: People running away from home to reinvent themselves, changing their name, changing their gender, ranting about kombucha and better crosswalks.

Only in SF did a homeless teen turn down a free sandwich from me because although he was on meth and living in GG park, he was still vegan. I suspect he went home to his Mom's house in San Anselmo on the weekends.

I suspect Austin is a similar shit show of 45 year old musicians living the dream while still insisting on organic bamboo sheets and almond milk smoothies.

And DC gets the worst of all- midwesterner "class treasurer" types who consider themselves "edgy" because they biked to work.

i would say that pretty much all of the flyover states are more spoiled and entitled than any listed here (DC, NYC, SF, LA). They think they're entitled to ruin our country with their uniformed and uneducated opinions. For example- Donald Trump.

Lol, funny because 1. Donald Trump is from big, important, "educated" NYC and 2. Most Donald Trump's least successful states were "flyover" ones, while his most successful were those enlightened places like MA and NY and CT.

Speaking of uniformed and uneducated opinions. What a joke.

I lived in SF, totally believe this. Thanks for the laugh this morning.

My vote goes for Silicon Valley. While there are a lot of regular people there just trying to get by, the people with tech money and inflated egos can be disgustingly entitled.
