Why did I think the 23rd was a half day in MCPS?

Instead we will be wrapping, making sugar cookie cut-outs, watching Christmas movies and going on a hike. Then the nutcracker at night. I took the day off from work too. It is our tradition of a guaranteed full family day.

That sounds like a great day. I wonder what is wrong with me that I cannot bring myself to do this. Even in undergrad I couldn't skip classes. Maybe FOMO.

Or is that a totally different group of people?

I wonder about that too. When MCPS closes, that's bad. When MCPS doesn't close, that's bad too. Basically, no matter what MCPS does, it's bad -- or so I infer from the posts on DCUM.

The MCPS bitchers generally complain because they PAID A FORTUNE for their house so they could SEND DC TO THE GOOD SCHOOLS, forgetting that they bought in a large diverse county-wide district with large diverse district needs and policies. Because they overspent on the house, they can't afford private so they bitch. The third option of working with the system to improve it doesn't occur or appeal to them. Serving on one of the study circles would cut into Pilates or Fantasy Football.

Private Catholic School parent here. We have this week and next week off. I hate it because I need the extra few days prior to XMAS to prepare (wrap Santa's gifts, etc). I would be fine with full day of school on 23rd.

The thing I don't understand is why people want the kids around so they can "prepare" Christmas Eve. I mean, maybe you all have way more helpful kids than I do, but having my kids in the house does not make it easier to prep food or clean.

A gentle suggestion: I stash the gifts in the store bag and then wrap them the next morning before I wake the little ones up.

Somerset parent here. Our team of butlers does all of the heavy lifting of our Christmas prep. DH and I just sip eggnog and bring in presents for our holiday butler to wrap and put under our tree.

MCPS teacher: if you sent your kids today, thank you. Double thank you if you sent them prepared to learn. Today was my first day back from days of sick leave. All five classes worked today. No movies. No Winter holiday word searches. We got a lot accomplished and enjoyed many "ah ha" moments.

What do you want- a slow clap? Seriously. You did your job. Bravo. This is a thread about today being a half day.

My kids were excited about going to school today. We're in MCPS and it never occurred to me that we'd need/want/expect a half day today. Having it wrong on your calendar I can understand but the people surprised there aren't lead-in days to Christmas?

Looking at my Google calendar, it appears that 2014 we had the 23rd off since it was a Monday and the rest of the day was vacation, so perhaps the way the holidays fell that made sense.

Personally we're not off work and we work the 24th too, although the govt closed offices at 1pm on the 24th so I'll be off in time to get the kids ready for church/dinner on Christmas Eve. I don't have the luxury of all the extra lead-up days, with or without kids.

No. It's a thank you for sending students for a productive full day, asshole. Not keeping them home because you assumed they'd watch movies. Did you post your nastygram for every PP who didn't stick strictly to the topic of a half day or save your bile for a teacher. Have another slice of fruit cake and STFU.

For the record. My dd did go to school for a full day today. And she watched movies.

What do you want- a slow clap? Seriously. You did your parenting job and legal obligation since your DD wasn't sick, in court, at attending the funeral of an immediate family member. You sent your kid to school. Bravo.

Do something actually exceptional for DCUM like email her teacher to express that you expect instruction or an assessment not movies.
