Because the anti-Christian bigots want to turn this Islam thread into yet another anti-Christian hate-fest. No, I'm not a victim and I don't care what you think in the privacy of your homes. But don't you think DCUM has enough anti-Christian hate-fests and maybe we could carve out a few threads to talk about something else? Like maybe start another thread about how wonderful atheism is, or something positive like that. |
But it's so much more fun for them to be disrupters! All I can think of is that hashtag for the Instagram fish--#Swimawayhaterz |
Islam is NOT a religion. It is a political system that does not recognize ANY wall, any separation between government and religion. |
Talking about the Christians who accost you on the street saying you need to be saved? |
|
Please. As long as there's an element of faith (God sent the Quran, ISIS' ridiculous millenarian beliefs) then it's a religion too. You're right that government and religion are more intermingled in Islam than in other faiths. But you said it yourself: religion is in the mix. |
As opposed to the Old Testament that Christians and Jews follow? Yes, what a peaceful document that is! |
It's the same "holy book." You can pick and choose the peaceful parts, so why don't you think peaceful Muslims do the same from their holy book? |
PP, you're responding to. That argument is really specious. But this author spells it out much better than I can. http://spencerwatch.com/2011/05/22/the-%E2%80%9Cbut-that%E2%80%99s-just-the-old-testament%E2%80%9D-cop-out/ The ultimate point is that Christianity still considers the Old Testament the word of God and an inherent part of the Bible and the core of the religion. You cannot disavow the word of God. In fact, Christianity explicitly does not do that. The New Testament builds on the Old, it does not replace it. Your contention, in which you pick and choose which parts of the Bible to believe and consider your gospel, actually argues for the point that the dominant majority of Muslims who are non-violent can use the same holy book as the radical extremists and still be good, peaceful world citizens because they can observe the good parts of their religious texts and ignore the outdated and violent parts, the same way that Christians can. |
The Old testament is a sacred and inherent part of Christianity that cannot be denied by faithful Christians. Among other things, it predicted the coming of Jesus. Christians go to great lengths to point out all the many prophesies in the OT about the circumstances of the coming of the Messiah. That's who Jesus was -- the Messiah that the jews of the OT were waiting for. Some people talk about the "God of the Old testament" as if he were an ogre from primitive times. But he's actually the father of Jesus, which Jesus himself makes very clear. The Old testament God impregnated Mary, a virgin, as was phophesized in the OT. How else could a virgin get pregnant? Only God could do something like that Anyone who tries to separate the acts of God in the OT from the acts of God in the NT is just wrong and is denying God. There are punishments for that, in both Judaism and Christianity. |

The New Testament is full of sayings from Jesus like this one: "
PS. Atheists telling believers what they're supposed to believe always makes me roll my eyes like the emoticon above. If you don't know anything about a particular faith and you aren't inclined to do even minimal studying, then your *opinions* are basically useless. Sorry! |
No. It's not about "picking and choosing" -- the New Testament clearly and very specifically counteracts the Old in numerous places. The New Testament is full of "you were told ... But I tell you..." sayings from Jesus. Like this one: "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy." But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous. If you love only those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that"? (Matthew 5:43-47) |
|
PS. Not sure how an argument that runs something like "But the Christian holy books are just as bad!", once we've all wiped the spittle off our screens, answers OP's question about the Quran. Sure, you hate Christians and Christianity, we all get that. But why not take it to a different thread. Then we can continue to discuss things like literal interpretations of the Quran, the absence of a central Islamic theological power, and so on.
TIA! |

For your reading pleasure and edification, and because you atheists keep getting it wrong, and because you've derailed the thread anyway with your "pick and choose" malarkey...
Here's another instance of Jesus clearly and specifically counteracting parts of Old Testament: "You have heard it said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also." (Matthew 5:38-39). |
There are many contradictions in the Bible -- as atheists know, just as well as,if not better than, Christians. Many atheists were once Christians and became atheist in the process of reading the Bible carefully. |
