| I was raised Mormon, do not consider myself practicing, but I have to say that we always considered ourselves Christian. I personally have always viewed sects unwillingness to acknowledge it as parochial narrow mindedness. |
What difference does it make? |
Honey, if you were raised LDS, you were brainwashed. You believe it the ultimate raising of yourself to the status of God or Goddess. That means you not only are not monotheistic but you certainly are not Christian. Educate yourself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormonism_and_Christianity |
You cannot write your own follow-up chapters on Jesus and say we believe in THIS Jesus and so we are Christian. |
Why not? All you're telling us is that Mormans don't fit your definition of Christianity. Your definition doesn't trump all others. |
Sure they can. ? |
A lot of people would argue mainstream Christianity isn't monotheistic. |
As a Christian and well, just a decent human being, I cannot imagine saying something like this to another human being who has just professed that she is a Christian. No amount of justification changes the reality of your words. You do not get to decide who is and who is not a Christian. THIS type of stuff is exactly what turns people away from religion, Christianity, and spirituality. I see Jesus just shaking his head in astonishment that you somehow completely missed the entire point of His message. To the Mormon poster - I have absolutely no doubt you are a Christian. We are all on our own paths towards that same end goal. Wishing you happiness and peace

Roman Catholics do not emphasize being "born again" or "converted" or "accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Personal savior." I should say that this is not part of a Roman Catholic vocabulary nor part of the catechism. Christians in the true sense of the body of believers accept that being in personal relationship with Jesus is the only, and I mean only way to eternal life - not Mass for repose of souls, not confession via a priest, not good works, not being a daily communicant - by surrendering your life to Jesus, by asking him to come into your heart, by saying the sinner's prayer, by personal confession you are saved. Period. |
There are several forms of Presbyterianism, something I didn't know until one from a conservative strain appeared to tell members of our church (NOT a Presbyterian one, even) that we should appoint him our minister and offered us copies of a pamphlet about how women should not be ordained (our pastor at the time was a woman). I grew up in and still worship in a mainstream Protestant church, and I don't think Mormons are Christians any more than I think Jews for Jesus are Jewish. But I don't care that the LDS is not a Christian church, and I would never tell members that unless they asked me, which . . . why would they? OP's kid needs to apologize to the LDS kid, and not an "I'm sorry you feel that way" faux apology. "I'm sorry I said you weren't a Christian. I was out of line." If LDS kid tries to engage in debate, your kid needs to shut it down: "I'm not going to argue with you about this. I'm sorry I brought it up, and I am going to debate your faith with you." |
NP here. Brainwashed as opposed to other organised religions? |
Roman Catholics renew their baptismal vows during the sacrament of Confirmation or make their own baptismal vows when they are converted. It's not called being "born again" but the baptismal/confirmation ritual serves the same purpose as the acts that you define as being essential to being born again. As for the "faith alone" doctrine that you are spouting... you do know that this anti-Biblical heresy, right? It's false doctrine taught to prevent American Christians from embracing the fullness of the gospel. It is designed to keep you watching Fox News and spending money -- rich, lazy and lost because you will not minister to the poor or seek social justice. James 2:14-24: 14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your[a] works, and I will show you my faith by my[b] works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?[c] 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”[d] And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Matthew 19:23 21Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." 22But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property. 23And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.… |

This is just a very sensitivve topic for LDS church members.
I once wrote a magazine article that was an intro to world religions. I wrote what I thought was a very respectful couple of paragraphs on the LDS church that included the fact that they were followers of Jesus, talking about missionary obligations, etc. I also wrote similar paragraphs about other religions and denominations. The ONLY people I heard from were Mormons, who wrote to ask me why I didn't emphasize more that they were Christians and just like everyone else, and sending me the book of Mormon. I know have several copies!

PP here. Meant to add that I got all the info from the LDS official website and people still were upset! |
