Child asked if Mormons are Christians

Catholics are continuing the traditions started by Jesus. The Protestants broke off a few hundred years ago and started their own thing. But, I agree that you should be teaching your child not to discuss politics or religion with those outside the family.

Well, they like to think they are......

My Presbyterian church teaches that Catholics are not Christians. I am no bible scholar (and not even a regular attendee at the church). I believe it has to do with accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior. My church believes that good works won't get you into heaven. Only accepting Christ as your savior will get you in. Catholics believe in good works and in purgatory which is contrary to these beliefs.

Now, I admit -- I may not have grasped the whole lesson they were teaching. So feel free to correct me.

My personal belief is that I am not qualified to judge who is a Christian and even less equipped to judge who may get in to heaven.

Catholics believe in salvation through faith but faith must evidenced by good works. Faith without works is dead.

Catholics do believe in purgatory, as a sign of God's grace.

Yes, Presbyterians believe certain things, which are slightly different than what Methodists or Baptists believe, or Lutherans or Episcopalians, etc. We're all Christian, as are Catholics, and Mormons who call themselves Christian.

Your Presby church is either weird or you're not understanding their teachings.

It's all subjective.

Sounds fundie.

Also, who is that minister to teach about a religion that is not his own?

A chief responsibility of religion is to divide - us (the right ones) from them (the wrong ones).

As someone who was raised Muslim, I always believed (and still do) that Protestants, Catholics, Mormans, Jehovah Witness, are all Christians. They have their differences of course, but they are in a similar branch (though clearly those groups within dispute it).

It's not just Christians that do this - Muslims certainly do that - plenty of Sunnis don't consider Ismailis to be Muslims either.

Human beings just love to create divisions.

But yeah, as someone from a Muslim background, they're all versions of Christians to me.

Which Jesus do they believe in? The one who supposedly appeared in America after the resurrection? And then assembled early Americans to establish the Mormon church here?

Considering Catholics have 1,500 years of Christianity under their belt that Protestants don't, the idea thag they aren't Christians is ludicrous.

They are not. The Eastern Orthodox Church is much closer to Christianity's origins.
