Child asked if Mormons are Christians

Who would say that Catholics aren't christian? That one is just bizarre.

Some do. And mostly those who say that belong to churches that teach you not to have close friendships with people who haven't accepted the "right" religion.

I might consider myself Napoleon, but that doesnt mean i get to sleep with Josephine.

Whether they consider themselves Christian is irrelevant. Whether they prioritize the teachings of Christ or some 19th century pervert is the key question here.

I'm not Mormon but I'm glad I live in a country where it doesn't matter what some crackpot on DCUM thinks of my religion.

OP, you are way out of line. Mormons self-identify (for the most part) as Christians. Period, end of inquiry. It takes nothing from your own faith that someone who has different doctrinal beliefs also considers himself to be Christian. When you tell a Mormon she isn't Christian, it is deeply offensive. Who are you (or your child) to make that judgment?

The jewish analogy is waaaaaaay off base. You really need to educate yourself about different religions. Jews do not self-identify as Christians. And Judaism is nothing like Mormonism.

I realize some Mormons believe they are in the Christian faith, but I really don't understand how they get there. My child passed this along to someone at their school that is Mormon, not sure why my DC did this, but that's a separate point. Now the family is very angry with us. My kids have asked if Jewish people are Christians, as well, and we have used it as an opportunity to explain the different beliefs. We also have emphasized respect for the various religions. Thoughts on this?

Actually, I think it is the point.

Christians shouldn't be so sure about who is saved and who isn't. Many people who profess to be saved are not. OP may profess to be Christian and not be saved. Mormons may profess to be Christian and not be saved. We don't know.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

How old is your child?

Catholics are continuing the traditions started by Jesus. The Protestants broke off a few hundred years ago and started their own thing. But, I agree that you should be teaching your child not to discuss politics or religion with those outside the family.

OP, I think the bigger issue here is that you accept whatever they tell you at church is absolute fact and are THEN surprised when it turns out not to be absolute fact.

...and are surprised that it pisses people off.

You haven't been around enough fundies and evangelicals. Nasty judgmentalism rules the day.

Please just confirm you are equally nasty and dismissive when talking about Judaism and Islam, which have branches that are even more judgmental about beliefs and/or who counts as a member of the tribe.

Awww... what's the matter? You don't like it when people treat you the way you treat them?

Sounds like a BS answer. Answer the question or admit you're one of these elite bigots who enjoy taking pot shots at Christians, but is PC when it comes to Jews or Muslims.

LOL

Fundies are fundies, whatever their flavor.

OP- I think you are being completely dishonest when you say that you are "not sure why my DC did this". I think you know exactly why. If I were you, this would not be one of my prouder parenting moments. Actually, I think I would feel like a pretty crappy Christian as well.

Many evangelicals and fundamentalists do not believe that Catholics are Christians.

What kind of nutty whack job church "teaches" it's congregation incorrect facts about other religions? I have been catholic, episcopalian and unitarian for long stretches and never heard an official discussion at church of other religions. This sounds so weird to me.
