If you are in the late 30-40's age range with young kids do you look your age?

Only people I know that legitimately look younger than they are, are Asian or black.

That is not a given by any means. Lifestyle (diet, exercise, alcohol consumption, tobacco, etc.) is a huge factor.

Depending on how I am dressed people do make polite comments. Like when I was pregnant with no. 2 saying I don't look old enough to already have a kid...sure, it's nice to near but I take it with a grain of salt. There is huge variation in appearances at this age, so looking good is looking good- not looking like you're still in your 20a.

I'm the slob. Yes, I had the same reaction. Kind of embarassed for all these posters.

Ladies, go hang around with people who are really in their 20s or very early 30s. You will be shocked. Because they look a lot younger than you. I think if the compliment is coming from a fellow old-ster, take it with a huge grain of salt. Everyone is telling each other what they would like to hear themselves and many of us probably don't see all that many 20-somethings on a day-to-day basis. (That depends on your job of course, if you work.)

+1

I'm 38 with a two year old and although I think I look "good" for my age, I know I don't look like I'm in my 20s or very early 30s.

Me too. I'm turning 40 this year with a 3 yo, and am currently 6 months pregnant. People usually think I'm in my late 20's/early 30's. I've always looked a lot younger though, it's nothing new. I hated it when I was a teen/early 20's, but it rocks now!

This. I'm 44 with four kids (twenties to teens) and I have a baby face. It used to bug me so much that I was treated as if I were a child when I was already in my thirties, but now it's cool. I'd say I look early thirties. My dad is 84 and he looks to be in his sixties. I'm sure I'll seemingly age overnight, but for now I'll keep the Dorian Gray thing going.

My idiot coworker has been telling people my age. My friend said she's just jealous that I am further ahead then her and look younger. Bitch is all I can say.

Sunscreen, a little Botox, daily skin care regime, gym membership, great colorist, and an awesome wardrobe really help to slow down the aging process. I am 43 and do look much younger than my age. I don't look 20, but I have seen many late 20s early 30's women who do not take care of themselves, and they look much older. Heavy, bad skin, graying hair, and clothes that do not flatter.

I disagree. People still generally look their age. They just look nice. My neighbor is very fit and takes excellent care of herself. She is probably a size 2 and I have never seen a gray hair on her. Her makeup is always done but very tasteful. She probably gets Botox. Her skin is great. But, I had her pegged around 45. Turns out she is 46. A great looking 46, but looks her age.

If you pegged her for 45 then her skin can't be that great.

It really is great. Very few wrinkles. She must go to a dermatologist who is a genius with fillers and Botox. But she still looks her age, not in her 20s or 30s. I have very rarely met anyone whose age has ever surprised me. Almost every looks their age. Occasionally I will meet a very elderly person who is in her late 80s and doesn't look over 70. But that is rare. 40 year olds don't look like they are in their 20s or even 30s. People lie to make you feel better. I do it all of the time! I did it to my neighbor.

News flash: the vast, vast majority of late 30/ early 40 women look their age if not older. People might tell you differently in a white lie or dumb attempt at a compliment but don't give in to your vanity and believe them. It's ok to look your age though. If we all just embraced the aging process, a lot of this free floating anxiety would diminish.

Donot get upset because you look older than your age. Some of us do look good for our ages and people often are surprised when they actually find out we are in our late 30/40's.

Just because you are no longer bangable doesn't mean you are worthless.

I'm 35 with one child. I'm Asian - I look about 29 or 30 and people are surprised to know I am married and have a kid. Asians generally look younger than their age. Frankly I find it disturbing because at work some people tend to not take seriously - they think I'm a recent graduate and don't have experience whereas I've been working for many many years and am at Manager level. Once they get to know me and my work it works out fine. But the initial reaction is annoying.

When will people learn that saying "OMG you look so much younger" or "O wow I thought you were ____ (enter an age 7 years below the age they know you are)" are COMMON courtesy compliments and truly mean nothing. Its another way of saying you looking great. Sorry to break your bubble but people don't think you are 31 when you are 44, they just don't.

This is so true. I've said that many times "oh you look so much younger!" just as a common courtesy. Almost everyone I know looks their age. Many of you are fooling yourselves! Get a grip, you probably look your age (or older!).

PP here. By the way, this goes for women of ALL races/ethnicities. So tired of hearing darker-skinned ladies talking about how you don't age - you do! We all do! It's shown in different ways, but I can spot the difference between a 40 yo Asian woman and a 20 yo Asian woman! And the 40 yo is not going to look very different from the 40yo white woman, or the black woman, or latina....
