Why is it okay for your dog to shit in my yard?

(I had dog and stroller and it happened so fast!)

Are you serious? I had no idea that it was against the law anywhere to let a dog poop on someone's lawn! I don't have a dog, but plenty of people have let their dog take a dump on my property. Usually they clean it up, but there is always something left. Also, there is a public stretch of grass literally two feet from my lawn, so I just don't get it. Interesting.

PS--I would absolutely not have cursed you out, PP, especially if you had a dog and a stroller and were trying to manage all at once!!!!

Yes, according to Alexandria City Code, it's unlawful for the owner to "Knowingly or willfully allow his dog to urinate or defecate on the private property of other persons without their consent or that of the authorized agent of the one having control of the premises."

I assume other counties have similar rules.

So, no one is supposed to ever walk their dog, then? Because I can't see how you would control this.

We had a neighbor like that. A88hole. So we decided to take matters into our own hands, so to speak. Thankfully, there are some wonderful cameras on the market! Buy a few and put them to use. Proof is everything.

OP, just set up motion detecting (and, I think its called infra red - so it can take clear pics in the dark) cameras where the offending neighbors offend. All you need to do is identify who it is (VERY easy - even if they wear baseball hats and shades like my paranoid neighbors tried).

Once you have the video and/or still photos, submit them to the authority that sends out fines for failure to pick up after ones pet. Or, if they are trying to use your yard inappropriately and repeatedly, put poison on your yard "for the grass".

Note: you can not put poison on any other property but your own, or you can be cited (or worse, by any of the entities which have an interest in doing so). Just be sure to put the poison on your own lawn. In addition, post that there is poison on the lawn. That is the limit of your liability.

Have fun!

Bitter neighbors are extremely easy to take care of. If you need an outstanding property lawyer, just repost with an email and I will be more than happy to share. If the problematic neighbor is a lawyer, I would bet you it would be fun to report them......

Signed, BTDT, "over it"

I don't own a dog, but you might need a life and/or a hobby. All that effort and time wasted.

OP here - just got back from work, and was shocked to see how active my post has been! I have to tell you that I was a bit shocked by the first few abrupt and nasty replies - especially because I prefaced my WHOLE question by saying I didn't know dog etiquette and didn't know if I was being unreasonable. Now I am happy to see that I'm NOT in the minority here

My front door is 30 yards from the road - so there is PLENTY of time for the owner to curb his dog for sure. The dog and his PJ clad owner were about 10 feet from my front door. To me it was blatant crap in my face that he allowed the dog to come that close to the house. It seems like such an invasion of privacy. And FWIW, this is not the first time this has happened. Its happened more often than I care to remember, but this one this morning was way OTT!

So did you say something to him when you caught him?
"OOPS -- you didn't make it to the curb, guess that happens every now and again"
Subtle but he should get the point.

No but good one!

I think you're stretching here. The law says private property. there is plenty of public, open space for dogs to do their biz.

Is the space between the sidewalk and the road public or private? I always thought that was fair game.

ye si am a dog owner and our vet suggested this method to keep the dog from ruining other things

THANK YOU!!! Running out for moth balls now...

Living in this area has made me hate dogs and their owners. I've never lived anywhere else that is cool with endless barking and that entitled attitude about letting the dog crap wherever. LET YOUR DOG GO TO THE BATHROOM ON COMMON PROPERTY (the grass near the curb, for instance). I am thisclose to buying a bebe gun and pinging the crap out of your dog (as long as that crap doesn't end up on my lawn!!)

I support retaliation in the form of human defecation on offending neighbors' lawns. Who's with me?

Does the smell of mothballs also deter them from the area in general, or just if they want to place their noses right on top of the ground? If it's a general deterrent, I am SO getting a ton of mothballs and doing some lawn decorating.

If I was queen for a day, I would outlaw lawns. Ugly waste of land and water. And the people who care about them are truly disturbed.

Says the person whose dog craps on other people's lawns.

I have an idea, how about all the folks who are ok with having other people's dogs crap on their lawns put flags up so that you all can swap stinky dog messes and leave the rest of us out of it?

16:14 - I seem to have hit a nerve. While I don't have as much time as my bored and troublesome neighbors, I am much more efficient with it

Excatylyvhy do this when you can just go to a daycare in arlington and do it?

Gross. I like dogs, but would be so mad if one pooped on my lawn. I agree that they should be doing their business in common areas/the strips of lawn between the sidewalk and the road. I can't believe so many people think it's ok for dogs to crap and pee on someone else's property.

Dog owner here - what that dog owner did was really obnoxious, OP. There's absolutely no reason for that dog to be in your yard like that.
