If there is a God? To be honest, I find the idea of god as conceived by religious people to be so untenable that I don't spend any time worrying about it. But certainly I believe I have lived my life with as much integrity and generosity as most religious people.

Well, it is not about living you life with much integrity, it is about accepting his existence. The very fact that you deny Him is the biggest lack of integrity....

This is some of the most smug, arrogant, self righteous b.s. I have ever read. The kind of nonsense that lets sanctimonious hypocrites profess their righteousness and godliness and then misuse positions of power for private good (like Gov. VagProbe for ex.).

God knows that you are this ignorant and she is probably really pissed off at you right now for so completely misunderstanding her words and her commandments, and somewhere down the road awaits your comeuppance.

How utterly ignorant.

yOU MIGHT BE UTTERLY SURPRISED when you die

And this statement, I think, best embodies exactly where religious folks and atheists completely lose one another. This is such a smug dismissive statement -- but forgetting all of that, it's almost GLEEFUL. It reveals a deep, giddy anticipation of seeing non-believers roast in hell for all eternity.

Yeh just like the statement you made of the believers when they were living , about how dumb they are to believe in something and how dumb they are to follow a religion and you are the smart one right?? So no wonder, the day you are proven wrong, the smart ones get to rejoice and watch

Anyone who would rejoice over people suffering excrutiating torture in the inferno of hell just because they didn't believe in something (god) is an inheriently evil person who should not be rewarded with heaven (if a heaven exists). That's just really sick and beyond hateful.

PP who talked about Hindus earlier - I've been gone fm for a while.

Yes, the glee about others frying is antithetical to any mature notion of religion. We also need to draw a distinction between (1) people who deny the existence of God and (2) people who knowingly do evil. PP is fighting with some atheists who are taunting her right back - do we excuse everybody involved as being terminally immature, sort of like an LD? Dunno.

You don't believe in God, ergo you don't get to pontificate ever about what God wants, not in any form, including erecting hypotheticals for straw man purposes. I really cannot believe you claim to have any insight whatsoever into what God wants. You forfeited the right to have any opinion about it when you rejected Him.

I'm the person who initially asked about Hindus. I'm genuinely curious about this topic so I hate to see these discussions so often dissolve into name calling. That said, there seems to be something especially nasty when a religious person so openly looks forward to seeing a person burn in hell. Whereas if the atheists are right, what validation do they get? There isn't any opportunity to gloat.

I don't know what I'm saying. I guess maybe because these discussions always end the same way -- a religious person saying "I'll watch you burn in hell!" and the non-religious saying, "Well that's not nice at all." because really, what CAN you say to that kind of thing????

Moreover, it's grossly intolerant, almost hateful, and about as profoundly un-Christian as you can possibly be.

And yet I'll bet the writer thinks they're a pure holier-than-thou hosanna-raising soldier for you-know-who.

Clueless hypocrisy rears its head again with tripe like that.

The author of that post is not an atheist. The author is a nondenominational theist who thinks that intolerant hypocrites like you are profoundly un-Christian, and that god sees this and it really pisses her off. You may spew your pompous declarations about who is entitled to what but god sees you for the phony that you are.

And yet there's a subset of believers who are so deluded with their intolerant hatefulness that they actually believe the crap like that, that they spew. Unreal.

PP you've been talking to. Different POVs I guess. While I'm embarrassed by the "you're all going to fry!" poster, I'm not at all concerned for the poor atheists, who seem to give as good as they get, complete with eyerolling emoticons. In fact often the atheists here initiate the fight with charges "lizard brains who believe in fairies." There aren't a lot of atheists here who are wringing their hands and muttering "that's not very nice" on DCUM. For proof, just look above, where there seems to be one gleeful fire-breather and at least two fairly hostile, emoticon-spewing atheists!

Don't tar the theists who reject the hateful "fryfest" zealots and nutjobs with the same brush ... not atheists, but also not intolerant and hateful arrogant dictators.

What do you think happens after you die? And if there is a God, what do you think would happen to you??

I am an atheist, and I honestly do not know. I don't really think about those two questions. I try to lead a good life/be good to people on earth and that is enough for me.

This is one of the most stupid comments I've ever seen. What does believing in a "god", for which there is no proof, have to do with integrity?

There is proof you are proof the fact that your every atom in your body works perfectly without your behind doing anything to make it so is proof that there is a God controlling everything. You think, this just happened by accident?? Really??

Random chance working on the physical universe. Yes. That's what I believe.

I think when we die, we're done. The machine no longer works and there is no one in there, once the moving parts stop working. The end.

As far as what if there is a God--- well, there are lots of opinions about what happens to atheists. Some Christians believe that we'll burn in hell for eternity. Catholics believe that there is no literal hell, but that we will be excluded from the presence of God for eternity. Some Christians believe that we will be thrown into a burning lake of fire and destroyed. Some believe that we will not be punished but we will cease to be. Mormons believe that we will be assigned to the lowest levels of Heaven, along with the other non-Mormons. Buddhists believe that we are reincarnated until we find enlightenment. If I understand it correctly, Jews believe that the impure are punished in Gehenna for 12 months before being allowed to enter Heaven.

That's a lot of opinions. I don't see a bit of reason why I should accept "the eternity in a lake of fire" theory over the Mormon theory that we will be consigned to "the telestial heaven." In fact, the Mormon version seems to comport much more with the theory of a loving God.

I am actually not rejoicing at the thought of you burning in hell for eternity If ANything, I hope you find God before you die so that does not happen. The more you get closer to God, the happier I am, not teh other way around. Even my entering in Heaven is not guaranteed so why would I rejoice at this?? To be honest I was just being sarcastic, didnot know atheists would take it this seriously.... I guess the fear of Hell is very real for Atheists though they claim to deny God Kinda ironic if you ask me

+10000000000000000000000 Very ironic that the ones who do not believe in God then want to have the privilege to speak for Him...Really buddy?

Wouldn't you want to know though? If there is an afterlife that is gonna be eternity, why aren't you concerned about your being there?

So, should someone just go through the motions of religion just in case there is a god? I'm asking quite seriously. Is it perceived in religious circles that "faking" faith is not only OK, but normal?

I admit I'm in the midst of a bit of a religious crisis at the moment, which is problem why I keep reading this dumb thread. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to believe. I would like nothing more than to have the certainty of religion when terrible things happen. I would love to think my loved ones are sitting on a cloud in heaven watching me. But...I don't. I just...don't. Is it better for me to pretend I do? Will that actually "get me in"?

It's not the fear of hell that is making people lash out at your statements. To me it's the same thing as a gun owner who says "You'll wish you had a gun when someone breaks into your house to murder and rape you!" There is an implied desire to see that happen that is just mean spirited.
