I am so over Greek yogurt...anyone else?

Only on DCUM can Greek yogurt people look down on us "regular yogurts".

Sigh, just another thing to not measure up.

I mean combining greek yogurt with toppings, homemade granola, walnuts, honeys etc made on premises. being greek i think it's a great idea and it would be nice to be able to grab greek yogurt somewhere other than a grocery store. thoughts?

No.

If you get it at Costco, it breaks down to about a dollar each or slightly less. Try Wegmans this week though. I grabbed 12 of them just because it was so "cheap"!lol

Was the yogurt on sale at wegmans or is that the normal cost?

I like it because it tastes less sugary than regular yogurt. It is sort of pricey, but eating one a day isn't going to significantly affect my family's financial situation.

Hahaha, I was reading dcum before bed last night, and I just remembered that I had a dream I was in Giant, picked up some "Greek" yogurt and discovered it was really just *regular* yogurt with *chemicals* added to make it thick like Greek yogurt. I was so pissed! Too funny.

If I have to weigh in, though I will say that while I love the full fat Fage, I don't buy it cause I find it too pricey. I buy grass fed yogurt for my dd and don't have any yogurt myself. When I am pregnant again, I will indulge myself. Maybe I'll try making it myself.

You dont even need the cheesecloth. Just line a colander with disposable coffe filters (clean of course). I have done this with store and homemade yogurt and it is so much cheaper.

I'm glad I found this thread because I considered starting a new thread asking what you favorite brand is. Mine is Greek Gods whole milk or Fage whole milk. I do not like low fat yogurts.

I add crushed almonds, fruit and drizzle of honey. Yum! It's very filling too.

Thank you everyone for the tips on reading labels and making yogurt. I've always wanted to make my own.

Even if you don't make your own yogurt, making Greek yogurt is easy with store bought yogurt. Just get some cheesecloth, a strainer and a bowl. Drape cheesecloth over strainer and place over bowl. Spoon yogurt into cloth and then wring it. Let sit over bowl in fridge overnight. Viola! Greek yogurt!

That works, but it's messy. There are purpose-made strainers that are very fine, like a reusable coffee filter. You make the cost back in no time, very easy and they go in the dishwasher.

Greek yogurt tastes like puke and I refuse to eat it. I don't undersand why on earth people would do that... I'd much rather get my protein some other way...ANY other way...

did you seriously search greek yogurt and bring up this TWO YEAR OLD THREAD for the sole purpose of telling the internet that you think greek yogurt tastes like puke? It's 2am and this is what you're doing? Boggles the mind.

PS - those of you who appreciate the amazingness that is greek yogurt - put a coffee filter in a colander, and rest that over a bowl. Put some regular yogurt in there and leave it in the fridge for a few hours. Some of the water will drain out, and voila - greek yogurt for the price of regular yogurt, minus a few ounces of water!

Or you can just heat 3 cups milk to 180, cool to room temp, add 2 tablespoon of pain Greek yogurt and place in a yogurt machine and you have Greek yogurt for the price of milk. The heating makes the yogurt really thick.

No, because it is healthy and tastes great. The price is worth the convenience to me. "Cheap" food is usually crap. If you want cheap yogurt buy Yoplait which is full of sugar, food coloring, and other garbage. You get what you pay for.

Dang...I need to start checking dates. I didn't realize this thread was 2 years old.

Haven't read the entire thread, so this may have already been mentioned: I heard on NPR Thursday that many (especially store) brands are using extra milk protein, gelatin and fillers to achieve the greek yogurt consistency. Chobani is the (only?) original one that still makes it authentically, by straining out the liquid. It was an interesting piece; I'll look next time I grocery shop to see which have different ingredients than Chobani. Here's the link:

No, Chobani is not the only one. The NPR piece says Fage does as well. I prefer Fage 2% and I use it in place of sour cream.
