No. First of all, they're not sugar-free. They still contain sugar. Second of all, I just disagree that fake sugar is better than some real sugar. I eat lowfat or fat free Greek yogurt and it's been very helpful to my diet--the protein is great. Sadly, it's a question of taste and many of us grew up not having plain yogurt. Yoplait and Dannon are so full of sugar. Replacing the added sugar with treacle-sweet splenda is disgusting. |
Giant just came out with their house brand of Greek yogurt. I thought it was good. Though I wish I like it without the fruit, etc. which way ups the sugar, etc. |
I like the thicker texture (and it's good for DD since she's figuring out how to spoon feed herself) but not the $$$.
So I get a big tub of 365 brand whole milk plain yogurt and a package of coffee filters. A few hours in the fridge and you have "greek yogurt." Top with some honey, fruit or granola. Soooo much cheaper (and probably better for you since you are limiting the amount of sugar). |
anyone think it would be a great idea to have a greek yogurt cafe/bar? I mean combining greek yogurt with toppings, homemade granola, walnuts, honeys etc made on premises. being greek i think it's a great idea and it would be nice to be able to grab greek yogurt somewhere other than a grocery store. thoughts?

Until today, I have never eaten greek yogurt. I am trying FAGE 2% blueberry right now for the first time. I totally agree... it does taste like vomit. But because I spent so much money on this puke, I feel compelled to eat it. UGGGGH!! |

I love Chobani yogurt and think it's really been a great help in keeping me from being hungry mid-afternoon during the work day. Even considering the price, it's cheaper than going for unhealthy snacks when I'm "starving!" |
8:51 here. I especially love the peach, blueberry, lemon, and apple. Yes, I know the sugar's high, but there's no fat and 14 g protein. I also throw a few almonds in with it. |
Haven't read the entire thread, so this may have already been mentioned: I heard on NPR Thursday that many (especially store) brands are using extra milk protein, gelatin and fillers to achieve the greek yogurt consistency. Chobani is the (only?) original one that still makes it authentically, by straining out the liquid. It was an interesting piece; I'll look next time I grocery shop to see which have different ingredients than Chobani. Fage fat free is one of my staples. I eat it every day.. Cant stomach yoplait or any of the other flavored yogurts. You can get it at target for $1.29. Love it.. I use it Instead of mayo all the time too (much to my familys dismay?). I agree Trader Joes is a close second to Fage in terms of texture.. Chobani and the others seem too thin and runny to me. |
The thread is so long I haven't read all of it, but I am sure I'm not the first one to suggest making your own. I make my own yogurt with 2% milk and strain out the whey by pouring it into a cheesecloth-lined strainer and leaving it overnight. You can also control how sour it is by putting it in the refrigerator as soon as the milk is coagulated. No additives, no extra fat, just pure Greek-style yogurty goodness!
I make about 1/2 gallon of milk into yogurt at a time, we eat a lot of yogurt so I usually do this 2-3 times a week. It takes only about 5 minutes of active time, though you have to be around when the milk is heating so that it doesn't boil over/ burn. The milk takes about 4 hours to turn into yogurt in warm weather, about 6-8 in cold weather. I strain 2 cups at a time (determined by the size of strainer I have), to get a cup of Greek yogurt. |
