3 week honeymoon in Thailand and Cambodia pre-kids
3 week trip to Thailand with one week at Rei Lei Beach with kid (one kid) - this was waaaay more expensive than our honeymoon. |

3 week vacation: Five nights in a suite at the Bauer Grunwald in Venice, facing the Grand Canal. The second week was in a suite at the St. Regis in Florence. The remainder of the time was in a suite at the Royal Hotel in San Remo. It was the most decadent vacation EVER. I will never be able to top it. The food we ate was OUTRAGEOUSLY good.
Now I just go to Capri every year and stay at the JK, which is also amazing. |
What is it? |
http://www.jkcapri.com/ not the PP, but have been there. Nice boutique hotel. |

Our Italian honeymoon was the most extravagant trip we've taken purely on our own dime.
But we also took a trip to Russia - Moscow and St. Petersburg that was phenomenal. Part of the trip was business, but we extended/added on. Crazy expensive place, but sooo unique. |

In terms of money, the trip I just took with my daughter -- because it was summer airfare to Europe, plus renting a flat for a week in London. Not on the financial scale of others on here, but a significant step up in terms of spending for me. (But I highly recommend renting a flat ... cheaper than a hotel and far more comfortable!)
Other luxurious vacations in other ways were hiking through Chile and Argentina for five weeks, and taking a leave of absence to travel through northern Europe on money I didn't really have to spend, and then returning to the mind-numbing job to apply to graduate school (a decision I made during my travels). |

ahhh...a nice reminder of why I went back to law school all those years ago...we are still paying down those ridiculous student loans but as soon as they are paid down I will get to take my luxurious vacation...and there are so many great idea's listed here!! Somedays I get bogged down with work and paying off the debt and I forget why we made that investment...but now I remember!! Thanks everyone.

| We rented a gorgeous private train car and rode it across the country for a week with our extended family (and a butler and chef). That was amazing. My grandmother was a train lover and had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer, so it was a sort of last hurrah. |
| Six week honeymoon in Greece and Turkey. Only a few days in Santorini were truly extravagant, money-wise, but spending the time was extravagant. |

What's the difference btwn extravagant and luxurious? Can't say I've ever taken a luxurious trip, like in 5 star hotels, etc., but probably the most extravagant trip, meaning one we really shouldn't have gone on, was a 2 week trip to Korea. We were there adopting our daughter and tacked on 2 weeks of sightseeing, probably not the wisest choice after our adoption expenses, but we had our rationale.
Also, have been on a 2 week honeymoon to Malta and Italy, and 2 week trips each to France, Turkey, and Italy within the past 3 years. |
| How are you all able to take 2, 3, and 6 weeks off at a time? The most my DH and I have ever taken off is one week at a time. The main reason is pets. We don't have any family in the area, so we hire a pet sitter. I still worry about them a lot even with just a week off. |
Well, you just answered your own question- we don't have pets. |
I don't have pets either but taking six weeks at a time would be unheard of for me. 2 weeks would be a stretch. Then again, I guess if you have long stretches off like a teacher or you work for yourself, it makes more sense. |
I was the we don't have pets poster. Sorry if that sounded too flippant. Yeah, 6 weeks would be a stretch, though I imagine it would be a stretch for most people. We've done 2 week vacations before, b/c 1) didn't have kids at the time 2) that was really the only leave we took all year and 3) no pets. So that combo allowed for a longer vacation. |
