Where does this mom stereotype live?

I was going to say Great Falls until I read the part about being uneducated and not being aware of the world. GF women dress the same way but are generally well educated (almost all have college degrees in econ, pharmacy, etc..and many with graduate degrees) and knowledgeable about world events.

This thread makes me really sad. Do you guys really sit there and spend time worrying about what type of jeans and hair correlates to a specific neighborhood? I can't even begin to imagine how empty your lives must be and what it must feel like to live with that kind of insecurity. Hugs.

Just little social, local anthropology.

"Rode hard and put up wet."
If you're going to use it, use it correctly.

Sorry, we don't all speak redneck.

Well take a Zoloft and move along.

You are talking about RIVER FALLS and I can almost name the poeple you are talking about and could not agree with you more. Grew up there and would never move back, they have ruined the perfect place. If you are not in the "cool moms" club you are an outsider but in reality, they are the outsider.

Spot on with the lower end colleges

Did not attend a top university, unlikely graduate degree. Husband in commerical real estate or some such work. Fairly catty, not particularly well educated in the world around her. Guesses? Other stereotypes (and they are just that, of course not all residents are the same) to add to the mix?

Sounds more like a certain ethnic/cultural group than a neighborhood type to me. The Gucci bag, painted nails and "having to" straighten her hair (rather than it being naturally straight and smooth) are kind of dead give aways. Also, the last bit "not particularly well educated in the world around her" screams this type to me. You dont find them in the same numbers here in DC as you do in the NYC area.

There is a difference between " worrying" and noticing. I doubt you are completely oblivious to the pack mentality that can surround certain groups. It's been going on since middle school and is of interest to the degree there are identifiable types. I take it a bit further and see how the mother's preoccupations are transferred to their daughters. And as someone raising a daughter in Potomac, it matters to me. Role models are important and social influences are important. I grew up in an urban environment with moms starting to have some interesting careers and you can bet that had an influence on me. You can also bet that my at home, lovely, very old fashioned mother noticed thatbshe was different than the dominant culture, norms, mores ( including clothes) from these mothers.

What would be the stereotype of a Springfield/Ashburn mom?

I did not intend this to be a Jewish description if that's what you are suggesting. Many of the women I know that fit this description are actually catholic. Fwiw

Do all of the "highly" educated, crunchy moms out there really want people to start describing you? Wouldn't be pretty... no pun intended.

You can be highly educated and very attractive. The women I hang out with I would say are super stars and they also care about how they look. Elegant, fit, smart and kind. These are the women I admire and they are out there.

I'm in Prince George's County. Have a graduate degree. And my designer is Merona. I'm not crunchy. Just sloppy. I feel anxious when I go to Tysons or Montgomery Mall. Thank god the standard is so low around here. I live in a MILF-free zone.

If those same women are on this thread, admirable and kind are not the words that come to mind.
